Wallace Drives the Wheels off the Stacker 2 Ford to Finish 13th
FONTANA, Calif. (Feb. 26) -- For the first 70 laps of the Stater Bros. 300 at California Speedway on Saturday, Stacker 2 Racing driver Kenny Wallace battled his car as much as he battled the 42 other competitors. The car was much more effective during the second half of the race, especially during the last lap when Wallace passed two cars to finish 13th.
Despite starting Saturday's race in the 14th position, Wallace found himself running in the 25th position by lap 5. The Stacker 2 Ford was loose on entry into the turns and tight coming out. When the caution flag flew on lap 28, the Stacker 2 team made necessary adjustments to try to get the car to handle better. They dropped the track bar and took a pound out of the left rear tire.
This change made the Stacker 2 Ford handle a little better but the car still had too much rear spring. When another caution came out on lap 49 the Stacker 2 team put rubber in the left rear and lowered the track bar on the right rear of the car. The team also took four tires and took air out of the left front. Wallace restarted the race in the 19th position.
By lap 70 the car was the best it had been all day and was described as being fast. Wallace was now battling for track position. When the caution flag waved on lap 79, the team decided to take right sides only and fuel. This enabled Wallace to be in the fourth position when the green flag waved on lap 84.
The car soon became tight again. To try fix the problem the Stacker 2 team decided to make an air pressure adjustment on both front tires when caution came out for rain on lap 109. Unfortunately, a lug nut got hung while replacing the left front tire. This caused Wallace the restart in the 30th position, the last car on the lead lap.
On lap 129 the red flag waved due to heavy rain on the back stretch. After and extensive rain delay the race was resumed on lap 132 and Wallace had already worked his way up to the 20th position.
With only four laps to go Wallace was in the 16th position. On the final lap Wallace was able to pass two cars in dramatic fashion while nearing the start/ finish line. Wallace finished the race in the 13th position.
"We're not happy with a 13th place-finish, but we're not disappointed either," Wallace said. "We had a loose lug nut and a bad car. "We were able to overcome that to go from 30th to 13th in 15 laps. We need to fix it up to be a lot better for Las Vegas and see what happens."
Crew chief Wes Ward added, "Kenny saved us and drove the Stacker 2 Ford up front. We have some problem areas to work on, but we think we know what they are. After having the bad pit, we are very fortunate to finish where we did."
The Stacker 2 Racing team will travel to Mexico City, Mexico, this week to compete in the Mexico 200 on Sunday at 3 p.m. ET. The Fox television network and the MRN radio network will provide live broadcasts.
