22nd Place Finish for Leffler and the #32 Lucas Oil Chevy at California
What started out as a promising weekend for Jason Leffler and the #32 Lucas Oil Chevy ended with a 22nd finishing position in the Stater Bros. 300. The Lucas Oil Chevy fought poor handling conditions throughout the race due to a run in with the #59 car on lap 22.
"We were optimistic coming into California. We had a strong showing in Daytona and the fact that I love racing at California added to our enthusiasm. Unfortunately, we just couldn't get the car to handle right," stated Leffler
The Lucas Oil Chevy qualified 16th for Saturday's Stater Bros. 300. From the drop of the green flag, handling became an issue with Leffler reporting into the crew "tight in the center". On lap 20, Leffler brought the Lucas Oil Chevy down pit road for four fresh tires, fuel, a track bar and wedge adjustment. Jason restarted on lap 22 in the 24th position.
Back out on the track, Leffler and the #59 car driven by Stacy Compton got together, causing damage to the right front fender. The #32 Lucas Oil Chevy returned to pit road under caution on lap 82 to repair the fender damage. The crew went to work and put on four fresh tires, fuel, another track bar adjustment and a slight air pressure adjustment.
"The car just wouldn't get out of it's own way. The run-in on lap 22 really messed up the Lucas Oil Chevy. We were tight in the center and loose off for the remainder of the race. I did the best I could to maintain track position and try to give this #32 Lucas Oil Team a top 10 finish," explained Leffler.
On laps 82 and 131, the #32 Chevy was brought down pit road for air pressure and track bar adjustments. Even after the tireless efforts of the crew to repair the car, Leffler was never able to break into the top 10 and brought the Lucas Oil Chevy across the finish line in the 22nd position one lap down.
"This team is strong and I have no doubt that we'll rebound just fine next weekend," said Leffler
Jason Leffler and the #32 Braun Racing Chevy head across the border this weekend for the first road course race of the year in Mexico City. Live coverage of the Telcel-Motorola 200 presented by Banamex will begin this Sunday, March 5 at 2:00 p.m. ET on FOX.
