Miller 23rd in Front of Hometown Crowd
FONTANA, Calif. (Sept. 4) -- REESE'S Racing driver Brandon Miller , a native of Rancho Santa Fe, two hours from California Speedway, was poised to put on a good show for his fans. Unfortunately, a flat tire on lap 91 forced the REESE'S team to make an unscheduled pit stop, which put the team a lap down. Miller finished the Ameriquest 300 in 23rd place.
"The REESE'S Chevy was tight the entire race," Miller said. "We made several adjustments during each pit stop but nothing really seemed to fix the problem. I really wanted to put on a good show for all my fans here in California, but with a tight-handling race car and a flat tire it wasn't meant to be."
Miller's weekend started with two solid practice sessions and a qualifying effort that was the eighth best of the day. Miller's teammate, Clint Bowyer, won the pole for the second time this season.
Early in the race, Miller kept the REESE'S car in the top 10. On lap 10, Kevin Hamlin hit the wall, bringing out the first caution of the race. The REESE'S team took advantage of the caution period and topped off the No. 21 with fuel and made a chassis adjustment to loosen up the car. By topping off with fuel, the REESE'S team planned on employing a fuel strategy to help it at the end of the race. Miller restarted in eighth place.
The REESE'S Monte Carlo continued to tighten, and Miller found himself outside of the top 15 by lap 30. Fortunately, the yellow flag was waved on lap 37, and Miller was able to pit. The REESE'S crew made several adjustments to help with the car's performance and changed four tires. Miller returned to the track in 18th place.
On lap 91, Miller came very close to hitting the outside wall after the REESE'S Chevrolet suffered a blown right front tire. The REESE'S team was forced to make an unscheduled green flag pit stop. Miller lost a lap to the leaders and never recovered. Miller finished 23rd.
Carl Edwards won the event, followed by Greg Biffle, Clint Bowyer, Johnny Sauter and Kasey Kahne, respectively. Miller's other Richard Childress Racing teammate, Jeff Burton, finished 16th.
The REESE'S Racing team remains fourth in Owner Standings, 387 points out of the top spot.
Next up for Kevin Harvick and the REESE'S Racing team is a return trip to Richmond International Raceway Friday, Sept. 9. The race can be seen on TNT and heard on MRN radio.
