Ups and downs at Dover for Kingsford/Johnsonville Team.

DOVER, Del. (June 1, 2002) -- Things were looking up for Stacy Compton and the Kingsford/Johnsonville Chevrolet team as they approached the start of the NASCAR Busch Series MBNA Platinum 200 at Dover International Speedway on Saturday. They qualified eighth, had good practice runs and ran second in happy hour. But at Dover, things can go south quickly leaving a team scrambling to finish the race.

Compton was running strong early in the race and seemed to have a top-ten finish within reach. The first caution came out on lap 43 and the No. 59 Chevy headed for pit road in seventh place. A good pit stop brought them back to the track in the fifth position for the restart on lap 49.

On lap 80 Compton lost control in turn four and hit the wall. "I'm not sure what happened there," commented Compton after the race. "The car had not been loose in that turn all day, but suddenly I got sideways. I'm betting there was some oil on the track, or something like that."

The incident didn't look like much but did enough damage to the suspension of the car to turn a top-five car into an "also ran." "It knocked the toe-in out, which we fixed on a pit stop," remarked crew chief Steve Plattenberger. "It also knocked the rear end over, which we couldn't repair."

The Kingsford/Johnsonville Chevrolet team finished the race 21st and put Compton 10th in the point standings. Greg Biffle picked up his first Busch Series victory of the season with the win at Dover International Speedway.
