"That will get us in the top 15, I think. I'm pretty happy with it; it was just a little bit free getting into the corner. We opted not to make any qualifying runs in practice, so Dan (Deeringhoff, crew chief), Steve (Plattenberger) and all of the guys just threw something at it because the race is more important than qualifying."
YOU SWEPT THE BUSCH SERIES RACES HERE IN 1992. WITH A NEW CREW CHIEF THIS WEEKEND AND YOUR PREVIOUS SUCCESS HERE, WHO IS MAKING THE CALL ON THE ADJUSTMENTS TO THE CAR?
"Dan and Steve are making the calls, just like always. It's just one of those race tracks that I always love and I've got a couple of wins and a couple of second-place finishes, and whenever you like a track it makes it a lot better."
GREG BIFFLE-60-Charter Communications Ford Taurus (Qualified 7th)
YOU HAD AN EARLY QUALIFYING DRAW, BUT YOU MISSED KNOCKING BOBBY HAMILTON, JR. OFF OF THE POLE BY A MERE ONE-THOUSANDTH OF A SECOND. WAS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU COULD HAVE DONE?
"It was my fault. I wanted to tighten the car up just a little bit because I felt it was a little free than the NEXTEL Cup car. I just had to come off the gas just a tiny bit. It was a little bit tight, so I didn't want to get up in the black qualifying. Maybe that was the thousandth of a second. I should have kept the gas down. The car was moving around a little bit and I didn't want to wreck it because I knew I had a good lap with a .90. I was trying hard, but the car was probably a little bit better than the driver there."
HAS A SECOND GROOVE DEVELOPED ON THE TRACK YET?
"It will definitely come in after the truck race tonight, but I was running the Cup car up there a little bit. In qualifying you don't want to run it up high, and a lot of people worked on qualifying runs in both the Cup cars and the Busch cars, so there's still not a lot of rubber up high yet."
BOBBY HAMILTON, JR.-25-Team Marines Ford Taurus (Qualified 6th)
YOU FOUND SOME SPEED FROM PRACTICE.
"The biggest thing is that we didn't get a clean lap when we were making qualifying runs, so we knew we could run a .90 and anything better than that was a bonus. The car drove great, the weather has been really consistent and that played into our favor as far as knowing the way the car was. You can go out and you qualify the same way you practiced because you don't have to fool with the track. I don't know if that will end up as the pole, but hopefully it will be in the top five."
HOW MUCH HAS THE RUBBER FROM THE TWO PRACTICES SESSIONS TODAY CHANGED THE TRACK CONDITIONS?
"There's a lot more rubber down and it's a little bit tighter, but it's the common stuff. With this tire, it's giving you so much more grip that it's putting a lot more rubber down, so it's almost doubling the way it normally is, but I have the best crew chief in the world and he'll be able to adjust around."
WILL TIRE WEAR BE AN ISSUE?
"It should be fine. Our tire wear looks great. We ran 30-some laps and they were really hard laps, so we'll be fine."
MATT KENSETH-17-One-A-Day Carb Smart Ford Taurus (Qualified 22nd)
"We have our One-A-Day car handling good. We did almost all race runs today, but the motor just doesn't run and we haven't been able to figure out why. The crew is looking at it and we'll get it figured out for the race tomorrow."
HAS THE TRACK CHANGED MUCH SINCE PRACTICE?
"It changes here a little bit during the day on Friday. It's not such a dramatic thing on Friday when they have the trucks here on Thursday, but it still changes a little bit."
JASON KELLER-22-Miller High Life Ford Taurus (Qualified 8th)
"The biggest thing is that we went faster than we did in practice. One of the biggest problems I've had is backing up what we practiced. We went a little faster and got a top-10 spot. All in all, I'm real happy with the way the car is driving."
HAVE THE OVERCAST SKIES KEPT THE TRACK CONDITIONS CONSISTENT THROUGHOUT THE DAY?
"The race track hasn't changed. Our car has been really consistent and staying the same. Unfortunately we're not perfect, but we're not way off. I know this race track is a concrete track and it stays semi-consistent, but when the rubber gets down it can get slick. We'll try and chase the weather and make our hot road a little bit better."
WILL TIRE WEAR BE AN ISSUE?
"I don't want to say there will be an issue, but there is a lot of debris already."
