Team Yellow rockets through field to star-spangled finish
DAYTONA BEACH, FL (July 4, 2003) -- Back in 1776 George Washington and Ben Franklin said "Yes We Can" when revolutionary history said they could not take on the might of England. Tonight, some 227 years later, "Yes We Can" was the battle cry from the #1 Dodge team as they worked past more cars than anyone else in the field on their way to a dramatic third place finish.
The Yellow Team put together an outstanding car for driver Jamie McMurray right from the start. With confidence in his machine and bravery in his heart, McMurray charged through the field from the 30th starting position. McMurray maneuvered around 24 cars on the race track while the No. 1 Dodge team picked up three more positions from the quickest pit stop of the event.
"It was so much fun driving tonight," McMurray said. "I always enjoy the challenge of working my way through the field, and I sure had to do that tonight. Luckily for me, the car was just awesome. We had the one pit stop and the team made a minor air pressure adjustment, but that's all I needed. I really think that if we had some drafting help at the end we could have won this thing. That's what the superspeedway races are all about though, you have to have a friend to help you get by the other cars. You can talk to people before the race, and the crew chief and spotter talk to people during the race, but when it comes down to it you just really can't rely on anyone. You take such a chance on getting hung out and losing lots of track position if you pull out on your own. The end result is this team put together another great car and had another great run."
The third place finish moved Team Yellow to second in owner's points. This is the team's sixth top-5 and eleventh top-10 finish of the season. This consistency and strong teamwork is what has kept them, and will keep them, in the hunt for the championship.
