Tim Sauter started in the 17th position after qualifying was rained out and the field was set by owner's points. Sauter was 16th when the fourth yellow flag flew for a spin in Turn 2. With rain looming on the horizon, crew chief Bobby Bakeeff gambled on pit strategy calling for a stop under the yellow. Sauter was just one of two cars on the lead lap to pit and had the race gone back to green-flag conditions, he would have had a distinct advantage over the other cars ahead of him. Instead, the race never resumed as a light rain forced the event to be called on Lap 74 giving Sauter the 19th-place finish.
TIM SAUTER POST RACE QUOTES:
On the handling of the No.19 Chevy
"For a car that had not seen the racetrack yet this season, it was pretty darn good. I was pleasantly surprised. This is my third trip to Darlington and it was the best car I have driven here.
On the "Track Too Tough To Tame"
"I think this the most difficult track we race at, but at the end of the day it wasn't so bad. I felt pretty comfortable out there and I know we had a Top 15 car. For track that is one of our trouble spots, I would say the team really made some headway at Darlington."
On the decision to pit under a caution that became the end of the race
"We made a strategy call and lost a couple of spots. If the race had returned to green we would have had a big advantage and maybe even moved into the Top 5 when the leaders pitted. We lost a few spots on the gamble, but we will take it."
On his second attempt for a NASCAR Winston Cup debut next weekend at Richmond
"I will be running (Dave) Marcis' No.71 cup car next weekend at Richmond. At Bristol I think the track time during Cup practice actually helped me out on the Busch side. I really enjoy racing at Richmond and I hope we make it in the show."
