TALK ABOUT YOU RACE TODAY. "It was a pretty good car for us overall. The car was really tight and that was the first experience I've had with a car being tight at Darlington. It pushed real bad going into Turn 1, which I have never had either. It must be track conditions and the heat, things like that. Hopefully this is something that we might experience in the fall and could work with. We tested here and our setup was quite a bit different from our test. We were just tight all day and kinda hung out and didn't race with anybody. I let Spencer go a couple of times and the 21. I just kinda waited it out until it got closer to the end and kept freeing it up, so I could run a little bit harder and stay out in front of the guys. The last pit stop, the guys did a great job and got me out second and gave me a shot at getting after Burton. Just a few more laps, we were still too tight, which was amazing with all the changes we made, but I think with a few more laps, I would have been able to give him a run for his money."
TALK ABOUT WANTING TO HAVE GONE AFTER JEFF BURTON SOONER? "I was not sure how good my car was going to be when we went back green, and I was right behind him. I knew that I didn't want the guys behind me to get me, so I had to be careful on how hard I went. Once I saw that I was clearly faster than the guys behind me, I just drove the wheels off it. I came in here and stomped the throttle and drove it all the way around the corner sideways. I got right to his bumper there a couple of times. Three or four more laps, I think I could have got a nose inside him and tried to take his groove away going into the corner. Really, we didn't have much of an opportunity because it was 10 to go when that green came out. We were waiting for the end of the race. That's where they pay the money and we just tried to stay out of everybody's way and keep the fenders on."
DID IT MATTER THAT YOU HAD A ROUSH TEAMMATE IN FRONT OF YOU? "I was running the heck out of that car. I was going to catch him and lay a fender to him if I had to. I just wanted to race with Jeff. I wanted to get up there. I would have raced him clean, but I certainly would have given him a run for his money. I was doing all I could, and so was he. He was sideways down in the corner, picking the throttle up. He looked like a jackrabbit trying to stay in front of me. It was a lot of fun. I also want to comment that this was the first time that I every bump-drafted at Darlington. Jeff (Green) gave me a push down the backstretch; it was unbelievable. I'm not sure if he was mad or helping me get by Jimmy Spencer, but he shoved me down the backstretch and got me by him. We wrestled for two or three laps and that's just Jimmy Spencer. I knew he was going to keep coming back, so I had to keep after him. We wrecked a couple of times, but just didn't hit anything."
