CONCORD, N.C. (May 22, 1997) Quotes from the top-10 qualifiers for Saturday's Carquest Auto Parts 300:
MARK MARTIN No. 6 Winn-Dixie Ford
"This is a fortunate pole we didn't have the fastest car in practice, and we didn't expect to sit on the pole. If we sat on the pole in every race and won every race, that'd be one thing. But these things are hard to win. We have lucked into at least three of the five we've had this year. "The Busch car was really comfortable and pretty fast right out of the box. We were fifth fastest after practice, but we got a late draw. I knew the track would be cooling off, so we made some chassis adjustments for that. That's where that lap came from, because that was two-tenths faster than what we practiced. Usually I slow down or at least run the same as what we do in practice."
JOE NEMECHEK No. 87 BellSouth Mobility Chevrolet
"It feels good. The week started out on the right note for us. This is the car that was so dominant for us at Las Vegas, and we crashed it. We think we can do it on Saturday. We're excited."
DICK TRICKLE No. 64 Dura-Lube Ford
"We had a shot at the pole. It got a little loose on me going into turn one but all in all it was a good lap. I got full throttle at that point, and that shook some speed out of it. We were third quickest in practice, but this is still a good lap. I've got to thank the Dura-Lube people and Brian Shaffer, my crew chief, and my owner (Dennis Shoemaker). They do a super job for me."
JEFF FULLER No. 47 Sunoco Chevrolet
"We were running about 10th or 12th all day in practice. I though we had a little bit left there but not quite that much. That was about a tenth and a half quicker than we practiced. We're happy with it."
RICKY CRAVEN No. 2 Raybestos Chevrolet
"I'm usually not happy when I look at the scoreboard and see that I'm second, but this is as good as we've run today. We gambled a little bit on tires we went out on stickers and we gambled a little bit on the gear. It was a toss up."
JASON KELLER No. 57 Slim Jim Chevrolet
"We needed this, really needed it. We were pretty fast in the first practice the fastest of them all so we didn't go out for the second practice. It was a good conservative run. I left a little bit out there. I lifted a little bit in the turn, and I had told myself I wasn't going to."
ELLIOTT SADLER No. 29 Phillips 66 Chevrolet
"It was kind of disappointing. It was fast as we could go. We tried to be the best we could be. This is my first race here at Charlotte Motor Speedway and all we need is a little good luck. We need to learn as much as we can."
BOBBY LABONTE No. 44 Shell Pontiac
"The car got a little loose on me. I only seem to get this right about once every 10 tries, so I'm not gonna be good for a while. I got it right last fall, so I've got nine more to go. But I'm not gonna have to run the 'Hooligan Race.'"
