Menard Finishes 19th in Carquest Auto Parts 300 NASCAR Busch Series Race at Charlotte

CONCORD, N.C. (Saturday, May 29, 2004) -- Rookie Paul Menard brought home a 19th-place finish in today's Carquest Auto Parts 300 NASCAR Busch Series race on the Charlotte Motor Speedway 1.5-mile tri-oval.

The 23-year-old from Eau Claire, Wis., started 24th fighting heavy understeer behind the wheel of his #33 Menards/Energizer Chevrolet of Andy Petree Racing. The team made numerous changes during early caution-period pit stops on Laps 16, 27, 43 and 75, but none seemed to be the magic solution to handling problems that kept Menard floating between 31st on Lap 45, to 17th on Lap 137, to his ultimate finishing position of 19th when the checkered flag flew on Lap 200.

Menard remained 22nd in the latest NASCAR Busch Series driver standings, and second in the Raybestos Rookie of the Year points.

Next stop is next Saturday's MBNA America 200 at Dover, Del.

PAUL MENARD

"I think we started out too tight and just couldn't get a handle on it the rest of the day. I guess you could say we just missed it. That makes for a very long day, driving around for 300 miles with a car that isn't just right. It's the same for a lot of guys out there. But we managed to stay out of trouble -- there were a lot of incidents out there today -- and brought the Menards/Energizer Chevrolet home in one piece. There's a thing or two we learned this weekend that will definitely help us out down the road. Some things to build on, at least. Hopefully that will start paying off next weekend at Dover."
