SPARTANBURG, SC (August 20, 2003) - Team Yellow drivers Jamie McMurray and David Stremme had the opportunity to spend Wednesday in Columbus, Ohio making friends with some of the top driving professionals in the Nation. Columbus is hosting the American Trucking Association National Truck Driving Championships, and Yellow Transportation has 20 drivers entered in the competition. Yellow will be competing for its third consecutive National Grand Champion Title. The names of those 20 Yellow driving professionals will be showcased on the TV panel of the No. 1 Dodge this weekend, along with the names of 171 Yellow Transportation drivers that entered their state championship competitions listed on the rear quarter panels and rear deck lid.
The 20 drivers qualified by winning their state competition and being accident free for one year. Additionally, the drivers must remain accident free through the Nationals. The competition allows the drivers an opportunity to demonstrate their driving skills and knowledge of the industry through a series of tests. These include written and oral examinations, a vehicle pre-trip inspection test and a skills test behind the wheel.
Yellow driver Jim March, a line haul driver at the Yellow service center in Lancaster, PA, will be defending his title as National Grand Champion. Yellow also captured the top honor in 2001. In discussing the competition March said, "There are four separate levels to the competition, and the pressure and excitement build from event to event. I do feel a bit of pressure because I won last year, but I'm just going to go out there and do my best for Yellow Transportation."
During their visit to the NTDC site, Team Yellow drivers Jamie McMurray and David Stremme had the opportunity to drive a Volvo tractor with a 28' pup. Both drivers did very well driving a portion of the competition course.
"This competition is all about quality and safety, both of which are extremely important to Team Yellow as well," driver David Stremme said.
Team Yellow driver Jamie McMurray said "Driving this course and seeing what these driving professionals have to go through every day gives me a new appreciation for their job. I did enjoy driving the truck, but I'll gladly stick with the No. 1 Dodge."
Team Yellow is the defending winner of the Food City 250 and is looking to hold that honor. Car Chief Jon Wolfe said, "This team always performs well here and we are really excited about this race. Bristol is such a fun track for the spectators, and the fact that it's a night race just adds to that."
The Food City 250 at Bristol Motor Speedway will be aired live on TNT and broadcast live on PRN beginning at 8:00 p.m. EDT Friday, August 22. Qualifying for the event will take place Thursday, August 21 at 3:15 p.m. EDT and will be aired on the Speed Channel.
