ROCKINGHAM, N.C. (Feb. 18, 1999) Bobby Labonte will drive the No. 44 Slim Jim Chevrolet in this weekend's ALLTEL 200 NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division race at North Carolina Speedway.
It will be a return to familiar surroundings as Labonte was sponsored by Slim Jim for his 1992 NASCAR Busch Series season. He won three races that year including his last start for Slim Jim on Nov. 8 at Hickory, N.C.
Labonte made his NASCAR Winston Cup Series debut in a Slim Jim-sponsored car at Dover, Del., on June 2, 1991. He was also car owner of the Slim Jim Chevrolets David Green drove to the 1994 NASCAR Busch Series championship, which Green clinched at Rockingham.
North Carolina Speedway was the scene of a significant moment in Labonte's early NASCAR Busch Series career. It was his second series race at Rockingham and 10th career start on March 4, 1989. As usual, older brother Terry was on top of the team truck to spot for Bobby and to give advice. When a caution came out about 40 laps into the 197-lap race, the Labonte brothers' dad and crew chief Bob Labonte asked Bobby over the radio if he needed to come into the pit to make an adjustment to the car.
Bobby replied, "No, it's OK."
On the radio comes Terry, who said, "OK? Look in your rear view mirror and all you'll see is one car! Either bring that car into the pits and get it working or just park it!"
Bobby brought the car into the pits for adjustments and finished fourth in the race -- his first top-five in NASCAR Busch Series racing.
In NASCAR Winston Cup Series competition at Rockingham, Bobby Labonte has one Bud Pole and a best finish of second.
