Concord, NC (October 11, 2000) - The Cicci-Welliver Racing team announced today that Steve Bird has replaced Wes Ward as crew chief of its No. 34 AFG Glass entry in the NASCAR Busch Series with driver David Green. The first event for Bird is the October 21 running of the Sam's Club 200 at North Carolina Speedway. Bird, 45, is competing in his 14th season as a Busch Series crew chief. He most recently worked with Bill Davis Racing as crew chief of its No. 20 Busch Series entry with drivers Tom Hubert and Dave Blaney. In thirteen seasons, the Lawrence, Massachusetts native has racked up eight top five finishes in the Busch Series point standings, including four Busch Series titles (1989, 1995, 1996, 1997), two second place finishes (1988, 1991), one third place (1990) and one fourth place finish (1998). To add to his accomplishments, Bird is credited with being the first crew chief to win three consecutive Busch Series Championships (1995-1997), and the first to guide his team to more than $1 million single season earnings (1997). To date, Bird has accumulated 428 starts, 22 wins, 102 top five and 195 top 10 finishes with $5,510,930 in Busch Series earnings. "We're bringing Steve on board to seriously improve the AFG Glass team," said Frank Cicci, owner of Cicci-Welliver Racing. "We want to make this team a championship contender and with him on board, I think we can do that." Cicci-Welliver Racing has been involved in NASCAR Busch Series competition since 1988. To date, the team has racked up 18 victories, 125 top five and 241 top 10 finishes. The team has fielded cars for drivers Mike McLaughlin, Jimmy Spencer, Jack Sprague, Randy LaJoie, Matt Hutter, Mike Cope and Clifford Allison. Currently, the Concord, North Carolina-based three-car team consists of drivers David Green (No. 34), Tim Fedewa (No. 36) and Todd Bodine (No. 66).
