Biffle to go for Three in a Row at California Speedway
FONTANA, Calif. (February 14, 2005) --- Champagne showers and joyous celebrating followed the checkered flag on both NASCAR Busch Series events at California Speedway in 2004, Greg Biffle found himself in the heart of the excitement both times in Gatorade Victory Lane, claiming two of his five victories last season at the superspeedway.
"It's always exciting to go back to an event as the defending champion," Biffle said while prepping for the season-opener in Daytona, "and in the case of California Speedway, it's even more special."
In a race that came down to pit strategy, Biffle's team gambled in the closing laps of the 300-mile, 150-lap race and they decided not to top-off for fuel last spring. Biffle was catapulted into the lead on lap 148 of 150 to claim the race win.
"Last year's Stater Bros. 300 was a roller coaster for us," he said. "We had a very fast car, but had a fuel pressure issue halfway through the event. Before we knew it, we found ourselves at the rear of the field. Fortunately, some cautions came out and we were able to work our way to the front. To win at California, you have to have good pit strategy. We definitely took a risk by staying out as long as we did, but it paid off."
In the second race of the 2005 season, the Vancouver, Wash., native will look to go for his third straight win at California Speedway in the Stater Bros. 300 on Saturday, February 26. He'll be joining Brewco Motorsports, teammate to David Green, in the No. 66 Duraflame Ford for all the companion events this year.
"The first few weeks of the season set the tone for the year," Biffle said. "I'm really looking forward to defending last year's wins with my new team. They are a young group of guys that have been knocking on the door of success for the past few seasons. We had a really strong test session here in January and feel like we have a car capable of winning.
"Goodyear is bringing a new tire to the track this year, and I really expect the tires to fade a lot sooner. With that being said, I think you will see better racing, more pit stops, and a lot of excitement. There's no doubt we have our work cut out for us, but I think we are the team to beat. Everyone always brings their A-game to California, because it is such a demanding track to race on, not to mention one of the most high profile markets we go to. Everyone is going to be fighting to get that first win of the year and set the bar for the rest of the garage."
