Derek Hayes becomes first driver to race at Rockingham tracks on both sides of the Atlantic.
Derek Hayes will take to the track on Saturday for the Target House 200, NASCAR Busch Series race in Rockingham, North Carolina, USA; to make a little bit of motor racing history as the first driver to race at the two Rockingham oval tracks on both sides of the Atlantic.
Hayes had his introduction to the Busch Series at Memphis Motor Sports Park in Memphis, Tennessee last month, when he finished 24th in his first NASCAR series race for the Moy Racing team. Now he faces the challenge of the 200 mile NASCAR Busch series race on the 1.017-mile North Carolina Speedway, known as the "Rock".
While the corners of the North Carolina track are tighter than those at the track of the same name in Northamptonshire, England, they are much more steeply banked at 22 - 25 degrees, compared with 7.9 degrees for the 1.5 mile track which is Britain's only high speed racing oval. Coincidentally, the expected average lap speeds of around 153mph are almost the same!
After a strong career in European single-seat racing, the 25 year-old from Dungannon, County Tyrone in Ireland, has shone in the "Days of Thunder" oval race series at Rockingham, England. They culminated in his gaining a place for the last half of the season in the front-running number 68, Team MacDonalds-HTML Pontiac Grand Prix.
This weekend Hayes will carry the website details of the British track 'www.rockingham.co.uk' on his Smart Prepared and the US Automotive number 77 Moy Racing Ford Taurus, to allow American racefans to check out 'the Rock's' sister track on the opposite side of the Atlantic.
The British track is named after the 900 year-old Rockingham Castle and village, close to the track. Over two hundred years ago, the descendents of the original Lords of the Castle were among the original settlers of North Carolina and in 1782 Lord Rockingham was the first British Prime Minister to recognize America as an independent nation.
The Target House 200 will begin at 1:00 PM ET on Saturday 8th November, televised in the USA on TNT, with radio coverage from 12:45 PM ET on MRN RADIO. British TV viewers can watch the action live on MOTORS TV, Sky Channel 416, from 18.00 on Saturday evening.
