Akins Motorsports Adds Second Busch Series Team; Chicago Native Sherman to Take the Wheel in 2005 MOORESVILLE, NC- Akins Motorsports owners Doug Stringer and Brad Akins announced today that it will field a two-car program for a minimum of 20 NASCAR Busch Series events in 2005 with ARCA RE/MAX Series driver Brent Sherman behind the wheel.
"I'm so thankful for this great opportunity to be affiliated with such a strong team as Akins Motorsports," said Sherman. "I'll have the chance to work with and compare notes with teammates, Kasey Kahne and Tyler Walker, something that gives us an advantage as a team.
"It's exciting to become part of an organization that's already so well established in the NASCAR Busch Series. I'm also looking forward to working with Dodge Motorsports. I think they work extremely well with their clients and they have definitely have the car to beat."
Sherman will drive the No. 58 Dodge, which will feature his current sponsors Serta Mattress and Hickory Farms. They will run a limited schedule in 2005 along with three races at the end of this season including Kansas City, Memphis and Miami. "I'm excited about running the 20 races next season as well as a few this year, and with some inviting sponsorship opportunities available, we hope to be able to expand to a possible full season partnership with Akins and even run for Rookie of the Year," said Sherman.
"On behalf of Akins Motorsports, we're thrilled to have Brent on board," said Stringer. "By giving him the chance to run a few Busch races this season, we feel it will give us the opportunity to work together before we begin next season.
"Brent has shown his talent in the ARCA RE/MAX Series, and we're pleased to have him as part of the Akins Motorsports team."
Sherman, whose resume includes more than six years of service in the United States Air Force, has raced in numerous events including the Barber Dodge Pro Series, Hooters Pro Cup, Go-Karts and Prototype racing.
He is wrapping up his second full season in the ARCA RE/MAX Series, where he is currently second in the point standings with seven top fives and 11 top 10's. He finished fourth in the point standings in 2003, recording six top fives and 11 top 10's.
Akins Motorsports, located in Mooresville, NC was formed in 1993. The organization has fielded various drivers ranging from Elton Sawyer to Kasey Kahne. Kahne is in his second full season in the NASCAR Busch Series with Akins Motorsports, and last season the team finished seventh in the point standings.
Aside from his newly inked contract, the Chicago local will try and rebound from his second-consecutive finish outside of the top-10, both resulting from engine problems (Toledo and DuQuoin). Sherman hopes to turn his luck around on Saturday, September 11, for the running of the Readyhosting200.com at Chicagoland Speedway. In two starts at the 1.5-mile tri-oval, Sherman has finished fourth and 31st respectively.
The green flag will wave at 2 p.m. EDT and will be televised live on SPEED Channel.
