REUTIMANN FINISHES TENTH AT TEXAS AFTER RELINQUISHING LEAD FOR FUEL
FORT WORTH, TEXAS (June 11, 2005) -- David Reutimann finished tenth in his No. 17 NTN Bearings Toyota Tundra after being forced to relinquish the lead for fuel at Lap 159. Reutimann led laps 155-158 in the 167-lap event.
"I really didn't even know that I led the race," said Reutimann. "We had to come in for fuel because we were a few laps short. We couldn't have made it."
Starting 23rd, Reutimann entered the top-15 by Lap 86 with a loose-handling truck.
"We didn't have the best truck," said Reutimann. "We've had better trucks at Texas before. The guys kept working on the truck to make it better. They did an incredible job and their pit stops were solid as usual. We pitted around Lap 31 for a wedge adjustment under caution. About Lap 75 under caution, we came in for tires and more adjustments. I'm not completely satisfied with a top-10 finish, but we'll be better when we come here in November."
After pitting again at Lap 95, Reutimann positioned his truck in the top-10 by Lap 136. As competitors ahead of Reutimann pitted for fuel, the No. 17 NTN Bearings Toyota advanced into the top-five three laps later.
"We were able to run in the top-five, lead a few laps and come away with another good finish," said Reutimann. "I feel like we raced really smart. I feel like we should have finished better, but it's still a solid finish for us."
At Lap 155, Reutimann took the lead. Knowing their truck couldn't go the distance without stopping again for fuel, crew chief Jason Overstreet radioed for Reutimann to pit at Lap 159.
"We came down pit road for a splash of gas under green," said Reutimann. "It's unfortunate that we couldn't make it on fuel. It was a situation that everybody had to pit again for fuel near the end of the race."
Reutimann's tenth-place finish follows his top-five finish at Dover International Speedway last week. Reutimann is now 12th in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series points standings heading into Michigan International Speedway next weekend.
"I'm ready to get back to Michigan," said Reutimann. "We ran in the top-10 there last year. At the end of the race, we were running 11th. We ended up being involved an accident on the last lap of the race. We were trying so hard to advance that we got together with another truck. Unfortunately, we finished 24th. Our goal this weekend at Michigan is to break into the top-10 in the points standings."
Live race coverage of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series event at Michigan International Speedway on Saturday, June 18th begins at 3:15 p.m. EDT on SPEED Channel. MRN Radio will broadcast the event.
