FORT WORTH-DALLAS (May 18, 2001) -- Over the course of his NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series career, Jack Sprague has had more than his share of shining moments. Unfortunately, the 2000 June truck race at Texas Motor Speedway wasn't one of them.
"We had a heck of a wreck at Texas last year," said Sprague, who crashed out of the event on Lap 122 and was relegated to a 28th-place finish. "Texas is such a fast place and things happen so quickly. One second, you're blasting around there at 170 miles per hour, and in the blink of an eye, you're sliding backwards at 170 mph. It's not the greatest feeling in the world."
Last summer's Texas truck race epitomized the latter part of the season for Sprague and his Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. After scoring a win a week earlier at Evergreen, WA, Sprague was leading the championship points chase heading into the Texas event. From there, the wheels literally came off the second half of the campaign as Sprague wound up with six DNF's (did not finish) and a fifth-place performance in the final standings. "Last season just didn't go the way we wanted it to, that's for sure," said Sprague, who returns to Texas this season sporting new sponsorship from NetZero Platinum. "It seemed like we weren't finding trouble, it was finding us."
This year, Sprague is looking to return to the form that earned him two NCTS championships. Sprague knows a good run at Texas will go a long way in achieving that goal.
"Texas is a great track and I know we can win here," said Sprague, who won the pole for the 1998 spring Truck Series event at Texas Motor Speedway. "I've always had a good truck here but we seem to come up short. I was kind of surprised to find out our best finish there is only a fifth in the 1999 race. We've been winning the championship every other year - 1997, 1999 - I'm thinking this year, 2001, is our year for another title. Maybe this is the year it will be our turn at Texas too."
