Sprague, NetZero Platinum Chevrolet Make It Two NCTS Wins In A Row At IRP
CLERMONT, IN (August 3, 2001) - After leading all but 17 of 200 laps in winning the most recent NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series event at New Hampshire International Speedway, Jack Sprague and his No. 24 NetZero Platinum Chevrolet served up a encore performance rolling to another dominating win in the Power Stroke 200 at Indianapolis Raceway Park.
"I don't think we were as dominant as we were last week," said Sprague in comparing the back-to-back victories. "Joe Ruttman, Terry Cook and Ricky Hendrick ran pretty good. My NetZero Platinum Chevrolet got a little tight and I was worried for a while. We came in and changed left-side tires with about 100 laps to go and the truck really took off. After that, the truck was the best it was all night."
In reality, Sprague's NetZero Platinum Silverado was good from the drop of the green flag as he jumped from his third stating spot to the lead on the first lap and proceeded to lead the next 50 circuits.
A round of pit stops shuffled the Spring Lake, MI diver back in the pack where he methodically worked his way to the front over the next 40 laps. After a second-round of stops that produced the decisive left-side tire change, Sprague was on a rail capturing the Gatorade Front Runner Award for most laps led in the event by the 160th circuit.
Only a late charge by Cook over the final 30 laps produced any suspense as to the outcome of the race.
"Terry got by Joe and ran me down pretty good," said Sprague. "I got a little worried because his truck was pretty quick, but my Chevy truck had staying power and he began to fade a little bit. I had no idea how he was going to be after that last caution, but my truck was real good off the caution, so I was alright."
Sprague collected a number of records in motoring to his 22nd career NCTS victory. Included in the haul was setting the mark for most consecutive races led in a season - 11 - breaking the old record of 10 that Sprague shared with Mike Skinner (1996). Sprague, the only driver to compete in all 161 NCTS events since the inception of the series in 1995, also became the first driver to complete more than 24,000 miles in NCTS competition (25,616 possible miles all time).
Most importantly, Sprague, the 1997 and 1999 NCTS season titlest, took over the championship points lead for the first time this season. Heading into the next event at Nashville Superspeedway, Sprague holds a 17-point margin over Ruttman.
"This NetZero Platinum truck has been strong all year," said Sprague, who earned $42,410 for the IRP victory. "I knew if we could get past some of the mechanical woes we've been having figured out, we'd be tough to deal with. This thing has been awesome, the best trucks I have ever driven at Hendrick Motorsports. The guys have been doing an excellent job. When we've finished, we've finished excellent. There's four or five races that knocked us in the dirt. I can't imagine the point lead we would have if we didn't have trouble in those other races."
Sprague and his NetZero Platinum mates will be looking to notch their third-straight NCTS win when the Federated Auto Parts 200 takes the green flag at Nashville Superspeedway, Friday, August 10, at 8 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time.
