SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Steve Portenga survived a caution-filled race with minimal damage and finished 13th in the Hardee's 250 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at the South Boston Speedway Saturday, September 21. Mike Bliss won the event, which featured a series record 88 caution laps.

Portenga, who started a season's-best 13th, sagged outside the top-20 early in the 250-lap race around the tight 0.4-mile oval. He battled to stay on the lead lap and fought his was from the back of the pack to post his seventh top-15 finish of the season.

"It was a pretty good day for us," Portenga said. "The Roto-Rooter Chevrolet was really good in qualifying. We were able to get our first top-15 starting position of the year.

"In the race, we were tight at the beginning. We had to make stop extra pit stops to get the truck better. The guys did a great job with adjustments. At the end, we were coming pretty well. I think with a few more laps, we could have picked up another position or two."

The performance kept Portenga 20th in the truck series point standings. He's within 60 points of 17th position with four races remaining on the 2002 schedule. The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series continues with an October 13 event in Las Vegas, Nev.
