Kragen/Exide 150 Saturday quotebook
SONOMA, Calif. (Oct. 10, 1998) Quotes from selected drivers following Bud Pole Qualifying Saturday for Sunday's NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Kragen/Exide 150 at Sears Point Raceway:
TOM HUBERT No. 66 Carlin Burners & Controls Ford "I owe Phelon Motorsports a lot for this opportunity. We struggled and got it together there right at the end. The truck was good. We could have pushed it a little bit more. I don't know whether I would have hurt myself or not. We'll just see if we stay where we're at and go from there. We've been on the loose side the last two days, so the main thing I tried to do was be smooth and make sure before I got all the way on the gas that I was straight. It stuck real hard everywhere, and it got through some of my bad spots that I fight here. This thing went right through them."
BORIS SAID No. 44 Federated Auto Parts Ford "It was a really good lap, but I couldn't get the F-150 whoa-ed down for the last turn. I just over-drove it on the last turn. Other than that it was a really good lap. We've been fast all weekend. We've got a lot of Federated people here, and we've got one fast Ford F-150 so I'm pretty happy. The race is going to be a tough race. Tire wear will be real high so track position and good pit stops will be what it takes to have a good run. Hopefully, we'll be there."
TONY RAINES No. 19 Pennzoil Ford "I messed up Turn 2 a little bit, but the rest of it was all good corners. I think maybe I even cut one corner a little better than we did in practice so I think I made up for it, and it evened out. I hope it holds up to be top-five, at the very least, maybe top-three. Boris (Said) and Tom (Hubert) have a lot of laps here, and if they both qualify well maybe I can follow them around. We ran really good at Topeka, and I'd really like to win a road course race for this team. They did a great job building the truck for here. If I could win a road course for them and myself, it would make for a good year. We've already got three wins, and if we could win on a road course we'd have one in every category."
KEVIN HARVICK No. 75 Spears Manufacturing Chevrolet "We had a good run and we've got a consistent truck here. The new track layout is going to be real good for the fans. I think they've created a better passing zone down there. We'll just have to wait and see."
RICK CARELLI No. 6 RE/MAX Int'l Chevrolet "Not bad, I hope like hell it stays up. You know, I made a bet with my son that I'll be in the top-10 and Dominick said 'Oh, yeah, the next thing you know you'll be 25th.' I hope we can stay in the top 10 'cause that's where we wanted to be. The truck's good, I mean, it seems to be good but I hung it out a lot more than I did in practice and we're quicker than before."
RON HORNADAY No. 16 NAPA Brakes Chevrolet "Not too bad. I'm pretty happy. I'll tell you, that's the best we've run but we went out first so I don't know if we could have run faster or not. Fred Graves and Gordy, who does our transmissions and gear ratios, have really got it. I mean, we picked up almost two seconds since we got here just by playing with transmissions and gear ratios and my hat's off to them. I'm just the driver of this NAPA Brakes Chevy. We'll see what we've got for them in the race tomorrow."
JACK SPRAGUE No. 24 GMAC Financial Services Chevrolet "That's as fast as I've been since I've been here. So, you know we've got another half hour of practice to work on this Team GMAC Chevrolet. We're loose and that's the best it's been, so hopefully we're getting close."
ROB MORGAN No. 46 Acxiom Ford "When they told me what the lap was I was kind of shocked because I think the truck had more in it. I overdrove it a little bit. I got a little more sideways than what I wanted to, and I missed a couple of apexes. But it was a good lap, and it felt good. I think we will leave it just like it is for the race. It feels really good."
TERRY COOK No. 88 PBA Tour Chevrolet "I think we've got a real respectable truck and I couldn't be happier. You know Chevrolet helped me come out here to do a little road racing school and that and the help from Bill Cooper have really been helpful to me. I was very smooth, precise and tidy and that's what Bill Cooper says it takes on a road course and that's what gave me the good fast lap."
GREG BIFFLE No. 50 Grainger Racing Ford "It's not what I expected. Everybody overshot Turn 11. People said that's where Boris lost his time. I didn't want to make a mistake down there, and I just started braking way too soon. I left quite a bit there, and in eight I tried something different. I don't know why I did on that lap. I was trying to save a little time, and I thought fresh tires would be quicker through there. They weren't, and I was just nervous, trying to get second place maybe. We'll keep working at it."
