New To Texas: Competing in the Pronto Auto Parts 400 at Texas Motor Speedway on June 11, 1999 will be an unfamiliar experience to NASCAR Craftsman Series Rookie contender Scott Hansen.
"Other than racing at Michigan Speedway in the ASA series and the one race earlier this year at Homestead, I do not have many laps around speedways," Hansen said. "Most of my racing experience has been on tracks one mile and under."
Texas Test: Hansen was able to test at Texas earlier this year, so he will be slightly familiar with the 1.5-mile speedway.
"We were really happy with results we received at our test at Texas a few months ago, " Hansen said. "Ken Schrader, our owner, tested the truck and he and I ran similar speeds. He was able to give me many suggestions, especially about how to make the truck turn better while drafting."
Advice From Mentors: Although Hansen is under the guidance of Schrader, he turns to others for advice as well.
"Jack Sprague has gone out of his way to help me with information this year from a driver's perspective as well as with setup information," Hansen said. "I know that drafting is a huge factor at Texas, so I will help him out in the draft as much as possible."
Hansen isn't the only Oakwood Homes Racing team member who receives advice from other teams.
"I go to Terry Satchel with Andy Petree Racing's Winston Cup team for advice," said Crew Chief Wally Brown. " He gives me general advice and shares his theories with me."
Rookie Truck: The Oakwood Homes Racing team will take a truck to Texas that has yet to compete this year.
"We are taking a truck that has a speedway body," Brown said. "The last race this truck competed at was Las Vegas last year. It was the same truck Scott tested at Texas and he said it felt good to him. I feel confident that the Oakwood Homes Racing team will perform well at our first outing at Texas."
