BRENDAN GAUGHAN in No. 62 Napa Auto Parts Dodge was the Raybestos® Rookie of the race at Richmond. Gaughan took top finishing rookie honors for the 10th time this season despite being involved in an accident on the final lap of the race.
"I really don't know what happened. There was an opening there in the middle. I think I saw Bobby Hamilton go up high and David Starr go low. My spotter called me right through the middle and there was a hole. I aimed for it and hit some oil. There was nothing that the NAPA gang could do. They had great stops for me. We battled back and forth. I made a mistake and nudged the wall and put us back there. If I don't do that we're not in that position. I can only blame myself but the NAPA guys worked hard tonight. I had a great night going. I made one mistake but Richmond is a great facility. We had good power. Shane (Wilson, his crew chief) had it turning good. I like this place."
DID YOU COME CLOSE TO MISSING THE ACCIDENT?
"I was through it. I actually made it past the first three guys. I spun and hit (Stacy) Compton, somebody hit me and spun around. I guess they said that my truck looked the worst. It didn't hurt it the worst. There was nothing I could do at that point."
GAUGHAN POST RACE PRESS CONFERENCE
"What a way to be the Raybestos® Rookie, huh? It was a bad weekend as a driver. I really hurt the guys a bunch this weekend. We qualified badly which was my entire fault. I got us near the front a little bit and locked up a brake going into turn one too hot and ended up touching the wall and putting us back there. And if we're not back there we don't get into it. The NAPA guys had great pit stops for me. They took good care of me all night and gave me a great piece to race. I love these Dodges. They're fun to drive, they've got power, they turn, and I've got a great crew chief. This is a fun place. I haven't been here. I went to school just up the road. I came down here and watched a few races. This is a fun place to race. It's a famous place too, coming from Las Vegas. This is one of those historical places for me. I saw glory right between that wreck and I was heading for the top-10 and I hit some oil. Glory is very fleeting in this business."
