Chevy Trucks 150 Saturday Quotebook By Dave Rodman
PHOENIX Ariz. (April 18, 1998) Quotes following Bud Pole Award Qualifying for the Chevy Trucks 150 at Phoenix International Raceway:
STACY COMPTON No. 86 Royal Crown Cola Ford F-150
(First Bud Pole in the NCTS.) "What can you say about these guys? They've got this Royal Crown Ford running awful good. We unloaded off the truck. We were awful fast. We worked on race set-up this morning. We weren't as quick as we wanted to be. We went back to where we were yesterday, and we got fast again. (Compton was fastest in Friday's practice and second-quickest in Saturday's morning session.) I'm pretty excited about it right now. There are some heavy hitters out there. There are some fast trucks, but that was a pretty good lap."
WHAT HAS CHANGED FOR YOU AND THE TEAM? "Everything is clicking right now. The Royal Crown Ford has been quick. I think it is just chemistry. Our motor program this year is good. David (Hodson, owner) has given us everything we've wanted, everything the team has asked for. Everything we need we've got. It makes a big difference. I feel we've got as good a team as anybody. We just need to prove it. We need to be here week in and week out. If we can do that, we'll have a good year."
ANDY HOUSTON No. 60 Addington Racing Chevrolet
"This is the same truck and the same motor that we had at Homestead and it was real good there. Rick Ren, our crew chief, made some chassis changes just before qualifying and he hit it right on the nose. We want to try to put this Chevrolet in victory lane for the Chevrolet race. It's looking good far..."
JACK SPRAGUE No. 24 1-800-MARROW2 Chevrolet
"All I've got to say is 'Dennis Connor.' The fastest I've run here on used tires was a (28) fifty -- on USED tires. It was slower on stickers. Dennis (crew chief) and the guys changed some stuff and she was mighty loose but it ran pretty good. We'll be in the top two or three anyway and I believe we'll race good. The truck runs real good on used tires I think we can win this thing."
RON HORNADAY No. 16 NAPA Brakes Chevrolet
"That's about what we practiced in this NAPA Chevrolet. There's a lot out there and I just didn't want to take a chance, you know qualifying and everything here at P.I.R. It's a long race out here and we just need to finish good coming out of here. We'll take a top-10 in qualifying and wherever we end up, we'll be fine."
MIKE BLISS No. 2 Team ASE Ford F-150
"We were a little bit tight, but the ASE Ford ran good. We should probably have been a little looser, but it was all right. I've never won the race here. I just want to win. I don't care about qualifying. We'll see."
CURTIS MARKHAM No. 32 Active Truck Team Chevrolet
"This Chevrolet truck has been fast every time we went out there. Actually, it's been faster on scuffed tires than the couple of times we went out there on stickers. That's by far the fastest we've been. The track was a little bit slicker with the sun out and we've been fighting a little bit of a push so who knows? Maybe it went our way."
RICK CARELLI NO. 6 RE/MAX International Chevrolet
"We were shooting for a top-10 and we're seventh. It was real tight when we qualified, so hey, I'll take it and we'll see what happens in the race. It should be a pretty good one."
BORIS SAID No. 44 Federated Auto Parts Ford F-150
"We were a little loose. On the first lap I got a little loose, and on the second lap I got real loose and I almost crashed, so I just came right in. I got lucky keeping it off the wall. That's the quickest we've gone yet so I'm happy with it."
MIKE WALLACE No. 52 Dayco No-Slack Belts Chevrolet
"Well, we're back to where we practiced at least. That's one good thing, you know, you've always got a start if you ran good in practice. We never made a simulated qualifying run during final practice because we were trying to get our race set-up. We're concerned about what the sprint cars are going to do and kinda how the race track's going to be afterwards. We're happy with qualifying. You always want to be on the pole, but... We probably should have made the truck a hair more free, but we'll be fine."
BRYAN REFFNER No. 66 Carlin Burners & Controls Ford F-150
"A top-10? Yeah, all the better. Last time I was here we had the outside pole which is a little bit better than 10th, but top-10 is a good goal to set. You can see the front of the field from there, and you can stay with the guys that run fast, and you can stay out of trouble, so that'll be our key tomorrow. So I'm pretty happy. You can always run a little better, and look for that front row, but a top-10 is great."
RICK CRAWFORD No. 14 Circle Bar Motel & RV Park Ford F-150
"Not too bad. It's better than we were at Homestead, and we won the race there. We'll make some more adjustments on it. I think we'll have a pretty good race truck tomorrow. We made a lot of changes on it after practice, and before qualifying. We'll make some more."
TONY RAINES No. 19 Pennzoil Ford F-150
"We were struggling on stickers to get it to turn on the first lap or two. We made quite a few changes. We felt like we had a pretty good truck in practice race-wise, but we just couldn't get it to free up on stickers. We got it freed up in the center, but it was a little loose off. I couldn't quite get as much as I needed. Had we made another adjustment we might have had a little bit more than that. We're towards the front half of the field. We'll get it fixed up to try and go win this thing."
RANDY TOLSMA No. 61 IWX Motor Freight Chevrolet
"That's by far the best lap we've had all weekend. We couldn't get higher that 26thon the practice sheets, so we got better than a lot of trucks with that lap. I've felt all weekend that we were going to race well, it's just getting a starting sport towards the front that's worried me. Thirteenth is very lucky for me. We started 13th at Texas last year and finished eight. We qualified 13th at Fontana and finished fifth. Our other 13th place starting spot was at Mesa Marin and we won that race. It's the best I've ever qualified here and maybe it will be lucky again for us."
BUTCH MILLER No. 18 DANA Corporation Dodge
"The DANA Dodge is faster than I qualified it -- I thought the track was dirty, and that probably cost us a couple of tenths. The truck's been good since we unloaded it. I don't know if there's a perfect solution to the handling here, but we're probably as close as we've ever been -- you just need to accept a little push in turns one and two, and a little looseness in three and four. The winner will be the one who closes that gap."
GREG BIFFLE No. 50 W.W. Grainger Racing Ford F-150
"Not too bad, but we were way, way better in practice. I just didn't drive it into the corner far enough. I'm just kind of mad at myself actually. I know we were a top-10 truck, I know we were. Sixteenth, I'm just getting frustrated with that, with being so far back. Every time I think we're going to be near the front, like at Disney, something happens. We'll just keep trying at it. I've got to get better at it."
TONY ROPER No. 31 Big Daddy's BBQ Ford F-150
"I just wanted to be smooth on my first one, and I think it was better than my second one. I get in a little too hard in the first turn there. Oh well. I was hoping to run a (28.) 50 something, but that .60 is two/tenths better than we've run the whole time. We'll take it and try to race tomorrow."
JOE RUTTMAN No. 99 Exide Batteries Ford F-150
"It was the best I could do under the circumstances. We really haven't been good. We'd get it from loose to tight, and it was loose. It was just loose. We've got one more practice to try to get it dialed-in. We just haven't hit it yet. I thought we could run a 5, but we didn't so we'll just have to take what we got and run with it."
JIMMY HENSLEY No. 43 Cummins Engine Co. Dodge
"We're a little disappointed with the qualifying, but we'll just have to race hard tomorrow. I got into turn 1 too hard on my first lap, which would have been my best lap. My second lap wasn't what I'd hoped for, but the Cummins Dodge team will keep working. Let's go racing."
LANCE NORICK No. 90 NHL Dodge
"The NHL Dodge was loose for our setup, but we'll be in the race, and we've got a good race setup. I'm running the Winston West cars, too, which is great because it gives me extra seat time and helps me get more familiar with the track. The fans here in Phoenix are great -- we went out to a Coyotes hockey game Thursday night, and everybody really got into it, up on their feet and shouting. Hopefully we'll get some of those fans out here to check out our race."
BOB KESELOWSKI No. 29 Mopar Performance Dodge
"We're not really sure just what kind of problems we're chasing. The engine seems pretty good, and the handling seems pretty good, but we're off a little bit. It's probably as good as I've ever run here, but everybody else is quicker. I'm not sure where everybody else is getting that speed, because the Dodge feels about right. With a little more practice and a few more adjustments, the Mopar Dodge will be ready for the race."
DOMINIC DOBSON No. 78 MCI/Mopar Dodge
"The MCI Dodge pushed a little bit in qualifying, but I think we'll be good for the race. I'm happy -- the team's been working really hard, and they deserve to get a truck in the race. I suspect we'll be in the back of the pack, but that's okay -- our goal is to start and finish the race, and we've got half of that done. I've raced here in open-wheel cars, but I've never finished a race. I look forward to finishing my first race here in the MCI/Mopar Dodge."
JERRY GLANVILLE No. 81 UniFirst Uniforms/HBO Ford F-150
"Our first lap we were just kind of feeling it out. And the second lap I slid, and I couldn't get on the gas. I wanted to get on the gas at the bridge, and I couldn't. I had to wait on it. But if we're in the race, I think it'll race good."
