Hornaday outduels Sprague to win in Phoenix

PHOENIX (April 19, 1998) Ron Hornaday jockeyed all afternoon for the lead with fellow NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series veteran Jack Sprague before overtaking him with three laps to go and won the Chevy Trucks 150 at Phoenix International Raceway.

The victory moved Hornaday into first place in the point standings ahead of Sprague.

Hornaday and Sprague, both Chevrolet drivers, started in Row 2 and made their move early in the race to gain the top two spots. Sprague led for the majority of the race, but he bumped several times with Hornaday throughout the event.

Hornaday, who had saved his tires throughout the race, spotted Sprague slipping on lap 147 and made his move on the inside. He passed Sprague, a three-time winner at Phoenix, and continued to lengthen his lead for the remaining two-and-a-half laps.

Stacy Compton and Cintas Rookie of the Candidate Andy Houston finished third and fourth, respectively. Compton grabbed his first career Bud Pole Award for this race and was joined by Houston on the front row. None of the top four drivers ever dropped lower than fourth.

Rick Crawford made a late move to finish fifth. He started 11th and ran a steady race throughout.

This was the third of 27 races on the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series schedule. The next stop is Portland Speedway on Saturday, April 25.
