David Starr and Spears Motorsports Victorious at Phoenix International Raceway
Avondale, Ariz...Showing the style and finesse that has earned them the reputation as one of the top teams in motorsports today, David Starr and the Spears Motorsports crew trounced the competition at Phoenix International Racing, taking the Number One Spot at the Chevy Silverado 150, Round 23 of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series.
"Winning here is absolutely unbelievable," said a very elated Starr. "Dave McCarty (crew chief) and the entire Spears Motorsports crew are just incredible. It all goes to them. We had a great Chevy Silverado truck, fast pit stops and outstanding horsepower from Ron Hutter Engines. It obviously proved to be the perfect combination."
Notching his second victory of the season, Starr, who won earlier at Gateway International Raceway in St. Louis, MO, took over the lead on Lap 123 when leader Ted Musgrave suffered a right front tire failure. Holding off Pole Sitter Jack Sprague he continued on to win by a margin of 0.297 seconds.
"Lady Luck was definitely perched on my shoulder this time," says Starr with a warm smile. "I didn't think we had a chance of taking Musgrave. He was definitely the class of the field. When I was able to close up on him so quickly, I knew he must be having a problem and luckily for me, we were in the position to take advantage of it. I can't tell you how happy I am to win this for Wayne and Connie Spears. They have given me the opportunity of a lifetime and I can't think of any better way to thank them other than by winning races. We gave them their first win the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series in Las Vegas two years ago and this year we have been able to bring home two more."
Starr's victory at Phoenix has moved him into 6th in the overall point standings, just 90 points out of fifth place. "We definitely want to end the season in the top five," explains Starr. "There are two races left this season, Darlington and Homestead and we took a 9th last year at Darlington and a 3rd at Homestead. With all the things we've learned this season, I think we can do well at both events and end up in the top five with no problem."
In addition to winning, Starr also earned the Featherlite Most Improved Driver Award and Mobil 1 Oil Command Performance Driver of the Race honors. In addition Dave McCarty received the International Crew Chief Award.
