Federated Auto Parts 250 Quotebook

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Aug. 16, 1997) The following are quotes from selected drivers after Busch Pole Qualifying for the Federated Auto Parts 250 at Nashville Speedway USA.

MIKE BLISS No. 2 Team ASE Ford

"It was a good truck for qualifying. I kind of ran a little higher line than I did in practice just to try to make two big long straight-aways out of it. I think that helped. We've got a good truck here. I'm excited."

Why did you change your line from practice?

"The track here on the bottom is real course, like it came up at one time, so I tried to run halfway in between it, and tried to get a straighter line off the corner. You have a tendency to get off the corner here, and I was just trying to run a straighter line."

RON HORNADAY No. 16 NAPA Brakes Chevrolet

"We gave it everything we had! This NAPA Chevrolet has been running real good butwe qualified in the top ten and that's what we've got to do. We just have to come out of Nashville Speedway USA with another good finish. We're looking for points racing now and we're looking to repeat that NASCAR championship for Dale and Teresa Earnhardt and Chevrolet.

JACK SPRAGUE No. 24 Quaker State Chevrolet

"We were good right off the truck. But we kept adjusting until we thought we could get the pole here again. But Bliss and Hornaday got faster, too.

"Starting third is good and we have a good race set-up so we'll go to work on that set-up now.

"We have to stay out of trouble . points are important for us now .but I still want to win every race.

BRYAN REFFNER No. 66 Carlin Burners & Controls Ford

"We would have like to have run a little better than that, but compared to our last couple races, I'm pretty happy because if you start up front you can usually stay there. We'll work on our race set up and go from there. At least I can see the front from where I'm starting, and I'm pretty comfortable so maybe we'll have a good finish."

JOE BUFORD No. 70 Action Engineering Ford

"Being the first time in a truck I felt like we had a pretty good shot at making Bristol, and we cut a tire down at Bristol (hit the wall and didn't make the race). We just had a good run. I have to give the crew a lot of credit for getting me here. The trucks are where I really want to go sometime in the near future, I hope. Hopefully I can run good tomorrow. Maybe somebody will take notice and hire me. That's what I'm hoping."

BUTCH MILLER No. 20 Orleans Hotel and Casino Chevrolet

"Got a great race car . got a great sponsor . and we're ready to finish out this season. The qualifying run was way better than we've run all day. Look the crew jumping around -qualifying sixth is like winning the race for us.

BORIS SAID No. 44 Federated Auto Parts Ford

"That was my best lap of the day. It was pretty good. It was a slow qualifying line and we just barely got out so I was really rushed. Normally I like to be in the car really early so I'm pretty happy with the way I qualified. The guys really gave me a great truck. It is a Federated Auto Parts race so hopefully we can do well this weekend. There is a lot of pressure on. There are about 1700 people coming through the pits tomorrow, all Federated people."

SCOTT WALTERS No. 37 Red Man Golden Blend Chevrolet

"I hope we can hang on to the top ten. The crew has been doing a good job all year for the three drivers . me, David and Mark Green all drivin' it. It's helped me a lot working with those guys a screw chief learning from them and learning the truck from top to bottom. I feel like that can make me a better driver. I hope we can give Red Man, Brewco and Chevrolet a good finish tomorrow.

STACY COMPTON No. 86 Valvoline Ford

"How about these Impact Motorsports guys? I'm telling you, they give me a good truck every week. We've had some good luck. We've had some bad luck. But you just can't say enough about these guys. Ford, they've got a great program. We've got a great motor program with Peter Guild and Pro Motors. Now, we just need to have a good race. This is the first time I've ever been here. Once again, like I've said when we go back to these places next year we should be better. When we go back for a second time with Troy (Selberg, crew chief) and these guys with their experience and learning more next week I think we're going to be pretty good next year."

RICK CRAWFORD No. 14 Circle Bar Motel & RV Park Ford

Where did that lap come from?

"I think it came from in the fire suit. We had a little meeting of the troops after practice and we decided to change some major components on here. I went to a couple other Ford camps and asked a few questions, and I appreciate the guys being honest with me. We didn't copy what they said, but it gave us an idea of what we had to work with. That and liking Nashville - I guess that helped. We'll need that 30 minutes tomorrow trying to adjust for the race. I don't know if we'll make two laps, three laps or 200 running like it is now, but at least we're finally in the show."

RANDY TOLSMA No. 61 IWX Motor Freight Chevrolet

"This new team just gets better each week. The guys are working real hard and really good together and it shows, I guess. I can't say enough about them and the job they are goin.

CHUCK BOWN No. 99 Exide Batteries Ford

"We ran a little bit better in the last practice than what we did in our qualifying run, but I think it will be a respectable starting position. It's certainly not the pole, but we'll have to wait and see. Tomorrow is a different deal. The first lap I didn't get through one and two the way I wanted, and then in the second lap I didn't get through three and four like I wanted to. If I could have one and two of the first lap, and three and four of the second lap, it would have been a little bit better. But I can't do that."

TOM HUBERT No. 18 Dana Dodge

"I'm disappointed in my qualifying run tonight. It's a lot of pressure to qualify when you've been out of the seat for a while. But that's part of it - you've got to be able to handle that kind of pressure, it's the same for everybody. Seat time is the biggest thing hurting me right now. I didn't get through the corners as well as I did in practice. I know this doesn't come overnight, but it's frustrating.

BOB KESELOWSKI No. 29 Mopar Dodge

"The first lap of qualifying was fine. I just drove it too hard on the second lap. I really thought the tires would stick better, but they didn't. I got loose and had to get off the gas and lost time. It's disappointing because we were a lot faster in practice."

TONY RAINES No. 19 Pennzoil Dodge

"I just ruined a great lap. The sun got in my eyes and I got loose. We'll be competitive in the race tomorrow we'll just have to start further behind. The track is better than it used to be - before they repaved it."

RICH BICKLE No. 17 Sears DieHard Chevrolet

"Well, that's two weeks in a row that we've been awful. I mean we ran good all year and even last week in practice we were really fast. We put new tires on to qualify and it goes into a four wheel slide and I don't understand it. I just don't know what's going on that's two weeks in a row we've done that. I guess we'll have to start in the back and work our way to the front again this week.

JIMMY HENSLEY No. 43 Cummins/Touch 1 Dodge

"I couldn't get into the corners and I couldn't get off the corners. I got loose during the second lap. We got loose once in practice today - we thought we fixed it, apparently we didn't. We're going to start in the back of the pack tomorrow - when we've started in the back before we've been able to come up through the field. Just another day at the office."

JAY SAUTER No. 3 GM Goodwrench Chevrolet

"We're just tight in the middle of the turn. We've got a little of work to do to win the race. It just doesn't turn in the middle of the corner like we need it to. We'll work on it tomorrow.
