Mopar's Musgrave earns NMPA Spirit Award for character and achievement

Team Mopar class act Ted Musgrave was recently selected as the fourth quarter recipient of the National Motorsports Press Association/Pocono Spirit award. The award recognizes character and achievement in the face of adversity, as well as sportsmanship and contributions to motorsports.

Musgrave recently completed his third season as pilot of the No. 1 Mopar Dodge Ram from Ultra Motorsports in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. Late in the season, Jim Smith, Ultra's team owner, revealed that Musgrave raced while receiving cancer treatments.

"A lot of people don't know [that] Ted was fighting cancer at the beginning of the year," Smith said Nov. 1. "We were winning races while he was going to the doctor on Monday[s] getting chemotherapy."

Despite his treatments, Musgrave racked up three wins on the season and finished third in NCTS championship point standings, just two laps and a controversial black flag penalty away from earning the No. 1 Mopar team a triumphant series championship.

Musgrave, who turns 48 on Dec. 18, drove the No. 1 Mopar Dodge Ram to a league-leading four pole positions on the season. Musgrave's efforts in 2003 also helped Dodge to capture its second NCTS manufacturer championship with several events remaining.

Tony Stewart, owner of several powerful Team Mopar sprint, midget and Silver Crown cars, also proudly received fourth-quarter votes from the NMPA.

The three other quarterly winners for 2003 were Richard Childress, Bob Latford and Ward Burton. The NMPA will announce the overall winner Jan. 18, 2004.
