SOUTH BOSTON, VA - With four top-ten finishes in six races at the tough South Boston Speedway, Mike McLaughlin has to be considered among the favorites for victory in Saturday's Textilease Medique 300 NASCAR Busch Grand National race. The Waterloo, NY native has suffered through a tough luck season to date, but feels his team is turning the corner.
"It's not that we haven't run well this year, our problem has been finishing races," McLaughlin said. It seems like we find ourselves in the top-ten nearly every week only to have a mechanical problem or get in an accident. Maybe we have used up all our bad luck and only good luck will be with us from here on out."
McLaughlin, twice a runner-up in South Boston (1995 and 1996) will be looking to score his first win of the year on Saturday night. In order to celebrate in Victory Lane McLaughlin feels his team must accomplish three things.
"We have to qualify up front, that's the most important aspect of the weekend," McLaughlin said. "From there we have to keep the car balanced and get it working well off the turns, where I can use all the horsepower down the straightaway. Then we have to have some racing luck and keep the car clean all night. If those three things happen, I believe we can give Goulds Pumps a win and reward my team for all its hard work."
McLaughlin will set sail for victory lane Saturday night at 5:30. If he can make it to Victory Lane, watch out, McLaughlin has been known to dive from the top of his car into the hands of an adoring race team!
* McLaughlin will be behind the wheel of the same car he piloted to a 2nd place finish at Nashville Speedway earlier this year.
