Dodge California Truckstop 300 Saturday Quotebook

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (Oct. 17, 1998) Selected quotes from drivers following Bud Pole Qualifying for the Dodge California Truckstop 300 at Mesa Marin Raceway.

RON HORNADAY No. 16 NAPA Brakes Chevrolet "I couldn't tell you how we stand. I missed one corner ... I just drove it in there too hot. It was a good lap to start this race. You know, we practiced all day here at Mesa Marin and then we qualify here at night. I went out second and didn't get a chance to talk to any other drivers to see what the truck was going to do. I wasn't ready for it tonight, so I'm gonna go hide so no one can ask me how the NAPA Chevrolet did."

STACY COMPTON No. 86 Royal Crown Ford "Actually, we are pretty disgusted with it. I feel like I let the guys down. We had a truck quick enough to be on the pole. We left a little bit out there on the second lap. On our bonsai run earlier this afternoon, we almost wrecked on the second lap, and the driver just didn't do his job. We've got an awful good truck. We ran real good in practice. I think we've got an excellent race set-up. But it sure felt like we left something out there with this Royal Crown Ford today. But tomorrow is a different day."

TERRY COOK No. 88 PBA Tour Chevrolet "First time ever here and boy is it slick tonight. It was a four-wheel slide all the way around the corners. I don't know what our time was but it looks like we're fourth. I don't know if that will hold up in the top five or not, it was definitely slippery. We've got a better set-up when it's daytime, so we'll be better than we were at night."

KEVIN HARVICK No. 75 Spears Manufacturing Chevrolet "Our run wasn't too good. It was slippery ... real slippery for me. But I think the GMAC will run real good 'cause that's what this Hendrick crew has worked on all day."

JACK SPRAGUE No. 24 GMAC Financial Chevrolet "Our run wasn't too good. It was slippery ... real slippery for me. But I think the GMAC Chevy will run real good 'cause that's what this Hendrick crew has worked on all day."

DENNIS SETZER No. 29 Mopar Performance Dodge "The Mopar Dodge is much better than where we qualified. We ran a strong second to Jimmy (Hensley) in practice this afternoon and I know that we will be up front for the race tomorrow. This place is the type of track that we like. I can change the corners and when the trucks start to drift high, I can pass 'em low."
