Memphis 200 Pre-Race Quotebook
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Sept. 12, 1998) Quotes from selected drivers entering the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Memphis 200 at Memphis Motorsports Park:
RON HORNADAY No. 16 NAPA Brakes Chevrolet "The folks at Memphis have done a nice job getting their short track ready for us. When we were there testing they were working hard putting the finishing touches on the place. From what I could tell it will be a tough short track. The fans of the Memphis area will see a great race. The track is fast and tight. Track position will be key. They say NASCAR is a contact sport -- for sure NASCAR racing at Memphis will be."
TONY RAINES No. 19 Pennzoil Ford "(Memphis Motorsports Park) is a good track. We're expecting the groove may begin to move up as the race goes on, so the key to winning will be the ability to work the outside groove. I really enjoy going to new tracks. No one comes in with a 'home-track' advantage and so far in the past, I've been able to catch on to a new place fairly quickly. Hopefully, that will hold true at Memphis."
JAY SAUTER No. 3 GM Goodwrench Service Plus Chevrolet "Memphis is where Elvis is from, so it's got to be cool. We went to Graceland when we were here testing in August. It just happened to be the anniversary of Elvis' death. We were amazed at the number of fans that still honor and mourn for him. During our visit to his home, we found out that Elvis used to give his employees pins that bared the initials TCB - Taking Care of Business. I thought that was pretty cool. We'll let that be our inspiration for the weekend."
JIMMY HENSLEY No. 43 Cummins Engine Company Dodge "A couple of races in a few days reminds me of the good ole days. We used to race in one city on Friday night and then load the car up and take it to another race track on Saturday night. Racing has come a long way through the years and the sport just continues to grow. I can't wait to go to Memphis to race and visit Graceland. I'm excited about racing expanding to Memphis and I can't wait to get there."
MIKE WALLACE No. 52 Purolator PureONE Filters Chevrolet "This track is brand new to us. I have never been on this track and in fact, I have never even seen this track. When I travel there on Friday it will be a first. We would like to make history in Memphis like Elvis did. Maybe I'll put on some blue suede shoes and do a little race dance."
BUTCH MILLER No. 18 DANA Corporation Dodge "This team has really gelled and our goal is to work our way back into the top-10 in points. I think that is very possible. But the key to obtaining that goal is taking it one race at a time. The next one is this one - Memphis. We will continue to approach the rest of the season in that manner, one race at a time."
RICK CRAWFORD No. 14 Circle Bar Motel and RV Park Ford "The Memphis track looks to be a cross between Richmond and Martinsville Speedway -- it's three-quarters of a mile long like Richmond, but it has longer straightaways and tighter turns like Martinsville. With none of our drivers ever having raced there -- although many have tested at the track -- it's hard to say who will be the favorite."
SCOT WALTERS No. 37 Red Man Chevrolet "This is great. I think this is going to be a great place to race. It's in a great place for the growth of the truck series, and located perfect for the Red Man team. We can drive here from our shop, which makes it great for the guys and myself. I hope next year we can run here a full week."
LANCE NORICK No. 90 NHL Dodge "I am looking forward to racing at the new Memphis track. The opportunity to test my talents and learning skills at a new track is one of the most rewarding experiences I have as a driver. I haven't seen the new track, but my understanding is it's a great facility and we can look forward to a competitive race. Our finish at Richmond wasn't reflective of how good the truck really was. We feel like we have a good chance at Memphis to better that finish and continue to improve as a team."
KEVIN CYWINSKI No. 31 Concor Tool & Machine Ford "We are ready for whatever the track throws at us. I like to race at new places and hopefully, with the help of my team, we will be looking at a top 10 finish. We have been racing well all year, we just have had some bad luck. Our team isn't ready to give up."
