WALTRIP PLEASED WITH 13TH-PLACE FINISH AT MARTINSVILLE
MARTINSVILLE, Va. (October 23, 2005) -- Darrell Waltrip finished 13th with his No. 12 Toyota Tundra in the Kroger 200 at Martinsville Speedway Saturday afternoon.
"It was a great day and I passed a lot of trucks," said Waltrip. "I came up through the field just like I hoped I would."
After starting 30th in the 200-lap event, Waltrip entered the top-20 by Lap 24. Waltrip was 17th before pitting at Lap 55 for four tires under caution. Then NASCAR issued a penalty to the No. 12 Toyota Tundra driver for speeding on pit road. Waltrip was forced to restart at the tail end of the longest line in 34th-place.
"I fought the law and the law won," said Waltrip. "On pit out, there was a truck in the pit box and I was going out when he started to roll. I just forgot that I had to go to the next line. When he started to roll, I speeded up a wee bit and they nabbed me."
After pitting again for tires at Lap 105, Waltrip reentered the top-20. With 35 laps remaining, the 11-time Martinsville Cup winner was 15th and moving forward.
"I restarted dead last and got up to 15th," said Waltrip. "I wish it was 500 laps today. In these 200-lappers you have to get it done quickly. I was really nice to people and didn't do anything crazy. When the sun came out, it got slick at the end of the day and I couldn't cut under people and pass them. If the race was longer, we might have made another pit stop for an adjustment. But, it was taking me a little longer to pass people at the end."
Waltrip passed two more trucks to finish 13th. Waltrip's No. 12 Toyota Tundra team is now in 23rd-place in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series owners points standings following race number 21 at Martinsville.
"It was a fun day and I was very competitive, and that's the way to end things," said Waltrip. "Coming back here again, I might not get that good of result. For a guy who hadn't raced in a while, today was a pretty fun day."
When the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series returns to Atlanta Motor Speedway next weekend, Joey Miller is slated to drive the No. 12 Toyota Tundra for Darrell Waltrip Motorsports. Live race coverage of the EasyCare Vehicle Service Contracts 200 on Saturday, October 29th begins at 3 p.m. Eastern live on SPEED Channel. MRN Radio will broadcast the event.
