FAMILIARITY CREATES CONFIDENCE FOR LIA AT NHMS
Success and Mod Connection Makes Lia a Truck Series Threat
(Huntington, NY) Donny Lia goes into New Hampshire NASCAR weekend brimming with confidence. After a strong run in his debut with Stringer Motorsports #90 Camping World Truck Series Toyota at Kentucky Speedway, he is set to do battle at a place he knows well, New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
"New Hampshire is like a home track for me," says Lia. "I absolutely love racing there."
Although Lia was born and raised in New York, the two-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champ knows the one-mile New England facility like the back of his hand. Theracedayraffleseries.com 175 will be Donny's 17th career start at NHMS. Lia has won twice in the NASCAR Modified ranks there. Last year, he captured a dramatic last-lap win in the June Modified Tour race at the Loudon, NH speed-plant.
Donny hopes to carry that open-wheeled success into his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series effort this weekend.
"At this stage in the game," explains Lia, "every bit of confidence you can put together helps. So much of this deal is mental. Going into a weekend with a positive attitude is a big thing. Going to a track that I know so well and have won races at definitely helps that confidence. I have a few trophies from New Hampshire and won the track title there in 2007 and 2009, during both of my NASCAR Whelen Mod championship years. I'm pumped to go back in the Truck."
"We are going to New Hampshire with a real good Toyota and a good group of experienced guys. The whole package I have going into this weekend has me excited. It's a great opportunity to go out there and run up-front. We are going to go out there and capitalize on it."
Along with the familiarity of NHMS this weekend, Lia has another connection that should prove fruitful during the race weekend. Stringer Motorsports Car Chief Donnie Tarantino shares a Modified racing background with Lia. Tarantino, who has worked with Stringer Crew Chief Trip Bruce for over five-years in the Sprint Cup Series and the Camping World Truck Series, is a fellow Modified guy. The car chief birthed his racing resume at Stafford Motor Speedway and has wrenched Mod drivers Rod Spaulding and Charlie Pasteryak throughout the years. Along with his responsibilities at Stringer Motorsports, he currently helps maintain the #7NY Modified owned by Sprint Cup Series crew chief Kevin "Bono" Manion, car chief Gary Putnam and driven by NASCAR star Ryan Newman.
"While I communicate the race-setup and what is going on with the #90 Truck with the crew chief, Trip Bruce, it's nice to have someone like Donnie (Tarantino) on the team," adds Lia. "He's someone that has the same background as me and we can really relate. It's cool having someone familiar with Mods and still works on them to talk to at the track."
The #90 truck the Stringer Motorsports team will compete with in Loudon is a brand new chassis that was run at O'Reilly Raceway Park and Gateway Int'l Raceway this season. This weekend's race will be Donny's fourth in a Camping World Truck at NHMS.
