Engine woes leave Portenga 28th in Las Vegas.

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - After charging through the pack early, Steve Portenga's run to the front was derailed by engine woes in the Las Vegas 350 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series event. Portenga finished 28th in the race at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway Sunday, October 13.

"It was fun while it lasted, but it just didn't last long enough," Portenga said. "I think we had a sure-fire top-10 run going."

Portenga charged from 24th to 14th position in the first 10 laps around the 1.5-mile oval. He raced into the top-10 at one point and was running 11th when the engine expired in his No. 39 Roto-Rooter Chevrolet. Portenga completed 108 of the race's 146 laps.

Despite the misfortune, Portenga moved to 19th in the series point standings.

The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series continues with a race in Fontana, Calif. Saturday, November 2.
