LAS VEGAS, Nev. (Nov. 8, 1997) Quotes following Busch Pole Award Qualifying for the Carquest 420K Presented By Las Vegas Events at the 1.5-mile Las Vegas Motor Speedway:
MIKE BLISS No. 2 Team ASE Ford
"This is the best we've been since we've been here. We'll work on our race set-up. We were a little off, but that was a lot better than what we had been, but that's good. I feel good about it. We'll get it ready for the race, and we'll be good."
Is this your favorite truck?
"It is right now. I'll tell you after this race."
BARRY BODINE No. 7 Rhino Linings USA Ford
"I had a little too dark a shield. We had the same (face) shield we had in during the day, and it was just a little too dark. I put it down to get my eyes adjusted. It ran great. It's been running great since we got here. It just ran great. I just slipped a little bit. I was just trying hard. We made some long runs during practice, and we could stay consistent. So if we can do as good (in the race) as we did in qualifying, we'll be all right."
BOB KESELOWSKI No. 29 Mopar Performance Dodge
"It's nice not to have to make excuses for poor qualifying runs. I'm real happy with my qualifying run. I really felt like we needed to be in the top-10 to be competitive, so this is great. However, I'm concerned with my race set-up. We have to work on our tire management in the last practice session and see what happens. I do feel good about going into the race tomorrow."
BRYAN REFFNER No. 66 Carlin Burners & Controls Ford
"We got a little loose for qualifying. Starting up front is nice, but we need to finish. It's been the same scenario the last few races. If we can start up in the top-10, that would be great. That will give us a good bunch of guys to start the race with. If we can start higher than that, that's all the better."
CHUCK BOWN No. 99 Exide Batteries Ford
"It was a pretty good lap. Actually, it's the best we've run since we've been here. I've been a little bit more excited about our race package than I have about our qualifying attempts we made in practice. So this is encouraging to get in a qualifying lap when it counted. I feel good about our race package. Who knows? This is racing. I just got a little brave running in there (in Turns 3 and 4), running in there a little too hard, and it made it real hard to get in there down in the bottom in the middle of the corner. I wised up a little bit in the second lap, and got it a little bit lower. All in all, I think it was a pretty good lap. We made some changes, and for once we guessed right."
JOE RUTTMAN No. 80 LCI International Ford
"We're not going to end up there (at that point, third in qualifying). It looks like we're probably headed for a top-10. I thought we could go a little quicker than that, but that's the best I could do. I thought Jack (Sprague, Ruttman followed him in qualifying) would have the wind stirred up when I went around there, but he stirred it up a little bit too much I guess. We expected, not a bunch more, but maybe a tenth or two more maybe we could get. Not enough though, not enough. Beat my step-son (Kenny Irwin) though. That's good."
KENNY IRWIN No. 98 Raybestos/Ford Credit Ford
"The truck was good. I think it (his qualifying time) will put us in the top-10. We definitely have a good, very good race truck, and just a fair qualifying truck."
KEN SCHRADER No. 50 Power Team Ford
"It was substantially better than we had run. We're in safely, so we're okay."
RICK CRAWFORD No. 14 Circle Bar Motel & RV Park Ford
"I'm just steering today. The guys put a heck of a motor in it from Lozano's yesterday. These guys have worked their butts off here for two days on this new truck that probably shouldn't even be running yet, but we seem to be fixing it as we go. It hasn't let us down yet. My old buddy Bill Elliott, over here in this Ford, we beat him a little bit, huh?"
BILL ELLIOTT No. 94 Team ASE Ford
"The lap was fine. I just didn't go no where. I just, I don't know. We just haven't been running that great since we've been here. We'll try to get it figured out here."
LANCE NORICK No. NHL Dodge
"We got a little tight after the sun went down. I'm glad we made it in the first round of qualifying. We ran with the fastest guys all day so I feel confident about tomorrow. I did well at California Speedway and I learned a lot about the draft. When it's this competitive in the field you can't miss qualifying opportunities. If you're off just a little bit it can really put you toward the back."
TONY ROPER No. 31 Taylor Vertex/Concor Ford
"That was as fast as we could go. We had to loosen it up a lot for qualifying, and that was as fast as I could make it go. I guess we'll have to be lucky enough to get a provisional or make it out of the qualifying race. It would have been a lot better if I hadn't almost crashed between (Turns) 3 and 4."
TONY RAINES No. 19 Pennzoil Dodge
"We were considerably better with our split times today, but we are still slow. We'll be good under long green runs, but we just can't seem to rip off one good lap. We're just off, I don't know if it's me or the truck, the chassis or what."
KEVIN CYWINSKI No. 18 Dana Dodge
"We should have been faster. The first lap wasn't terrible. It was good enough that I should have been able to pick it up in the second lap. The field is so competitive. I'm just glad I have the opportunity to run in the qualifying race because otherwise I'd be sitting on the hauler. I think we should have no problem making it in to the field through the qualifying race."
JIMMY HENSLEY No. 43 Cummins Engine Company Dodge
"We've been struggling since we got here. Hopefully we can iron it out in the last qualifying session. It felt like the truck was driving me instead of the other way around, and that's not good."
