Stefanik has fun Sunday drive By Brett Borden

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (Nov. 8, 1998) Mike Stefanik already has two NASCAR touring division championships under his belt this year. He earned the chance to have a little fun with the 'big boys' of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, and fun he had.

Stefanik was like a kid with a new toy, getting so overexcited that he spun the No. 66 Carlin Burners & Controls Ford out on just the second lap of Sunday's Sam's Town 250 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

"I think I messed up on lap two," he said after the race. "I was just having too much fun too soon. I just pinched it down, and when the tires aren't up to temperature, and with the trucks around you, it really affects the air. I don't have much experience there. It was just driver error."

It was one of very few errors by Stefanik on the day. He methodically moved from the rear of the field after his spin to a strong eighth-place finish. He came into this weekend hoping to prove to himself he could do it, and he leaves having proved it to everyone.

"I have to thank the whole team and Dale Phelon for giving me the opportunity to come out here. It was fun, and it is a great series. The trucks drive well. I've got a lot to learn about driving them. We had a good day, and everybody seems pretty happy."

But not as happy as the driver, who may need offseason surgery to remove the grin from his face.
