Looking to hit the Las Vegas Motor Speedway jackpot, David Starr and the Spears Motorsports crew head for the Silver State and the running of the Las Vegas 350, Round 19 of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, Saturday, September 25.
"Las Vegas Motor Speedway is a very special place to me", says Starr who earned his first Craftsman Truck win (2002) and his first NASCAR West Series win (2000) at the track know as the 'Diamond in the Desert'. "Both the Speedway and the whole city are magical and exciting. It's a total up feeling."
Currently ranked in 8th in the overall point standings, Starr, who took the Number One spot at Gateway, is looking to make Las Vegas the scene of his second win this season. "We took second last year right behind hometown favorite Brendan Gaughan," says Starr. "Now that Gaughan is gone, we should be able to put our No. 75 Spears Chevy Silverado in first. To date there have been seven truck races at the Speedway and only one driver has won twice. I would like to be the second driver to score two victories."
A hard charger from the word go, Starr's burning desire to win is evident as it is with the entire team. "My guys build our Spears Chevy trucks to win," he continues. "Las Vegas definitely suits my style. It is fast, extremely smooth and multi-grooved for good passing. Doing well requires a good handling truck, one with good downforce and you need some horsepower under the hood. We know we have the right package with our Spears Chevy and our Hutter engines. All we need is some of that good old-fashioned Las Vegas luck."
The Las Vegas 350 will mark the fifth time that Starr has competed at this track. "We've finished in the top ten three out of four times," he says. "And our two top three finishes were under the Spears banner. Knowing that good things some in groups of three, I figure our odds are pretty good this time out. This is another one-day show and its going to be good. We have two and a half-hours of practice in the morning, then we qualify and race. Last year, this race drew an incredible crowd and their enthusiasm made it one of the best races on the circuit. This year it should be even better. In short, it is a race I am really looking forward to."
Qualifying for the Las Vegas 350 takes place at 3:30 PM (PT) and race action gets underway at 7 PM (PT). Be sure and tune in to Truckseries.com for live qualifying and If you aren't attending to race, catch it live on SPEED TV.
