SPARTA, KY (July 11, 2004) -- David Reutimann finished ninth in the No. 17 NTN Bearings Toyota Tundra at the 1.5-mile Kentucky Speedway tri-oval Saturday night. Reutimann earned his fifth Top-10 of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series season and the Darrell Waltrip Motorsports entry was the highest finishing Toyota.
"We kept the fenders on the No. 17 NTN Bearings Toyota Tundra and finished in the Top-10," said Reutimann. "The truck was good, but I'm not sure if there was something wrong with the ignition or if there was trash in the carburetor because the motor was flat. The truck was perfect in practice, but we seemed to lose RPM during the race and it just wouldn't go. There was an issue there somewhere. We had a Top-5 truck, but we put a Top-10 finish on it.
"I messed up and wrecked us last week," continued Reutimann. "We needed a good finish this weekend. We've had some really good runs and strong trucks. Toyota is doing a great job and we're just going to get better. We've regrouped and we have some catching up to do. Our goal is to get back into the Top-10 in points and go from there."
After Reutimann started 14th because qualifying was canceled due to inclement weather for a second week in a row, the top finishing Raybestos Rookie's hands were full with a loose handling No. 17 NTN Bearings Toyota until the Darrell Waltrip Motorsports team made adjustments at Lap 53.
"We were way loose 50 laps into the event," said Reutimann. "We put on four tires and made a big track bar adjustment on our first stop. Around Lap 99, we pitted again under caution for four tires and adjustments because the truck still needed to be tighter. We got the truck better and we were able to garner a Top-10 finish giving us momentum heading into Gateway."
In 11 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series starts, the Raybestos Rookie points leader has one Bud Pole Award, two Top-5 and five Top-10 finishes entering Gateway International Raceway this weekend. Reutimann looks to improve his 14th-place position in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series points standings.
"Gateway is another track I've ran well at in a Busch Series car," said Reutimann. "Earlier in the season, I ran Joe Nemechek's No. 87 entry. We had a strong car and we were running in the Top-10 before the engine expired. It's another track I enjoy racing at and I'm looking forward to racing under the lights."
Live coverage of the 160-lap (200-mile) event at Gateway International Raceway is scheduled Saturday, July 17th at 8:00 p.m. EDT live on SPEED Channel. MRN Radio willbroadcast the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series event.
