KELLY 'GIRL' SUTTON ENTERS 2006 CRAFTSMAN TRUCK SERIES WITH NEW CREW CHIEF AND NEW OPTIMISM
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Feb. 8, 2006) - Kelly "Girl" Sutton, driver for the #02 COPAXONE(r) Chevrolet on the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, enters the season-opening Daytona 250 riding the momentum of a great test in January and the off-season hiring of Crew Chief Gary Showalter, a fixture of the series since its inception.
At last month's testing, Sutton drove through the constant pain of a staph infection she contracted during offseason knee surgery and managed to have an excellent test session. Sutton's showing in January built off the success she had at Daytona in 2005, when she finished 17th at the season's first race.
"This off-season certainly had its share of ups and downs," said Sutton. "But, the good news of adding a top crew chief and performing well at the Daytona testing has all of Team COPAXONE(r) and Sutton Motorsports expecting the best in '06."
Crew Chief Gary Showalter joined Sutton Motorsports last month after managing Todd Bodine's team to a fifth-place point standings in the first four Craftsman Truck races in 2005. Additionally, Showalter boasts experience with Joe Gibbs Racing's first effort in the truck series, and he led Kenny Irwin to several race victories and a Rookie of the Year honor.
"Before Kelly and the rest of Sutton Motorsports asked me to join the team, I could tell from a distance that Kelly had the determination and talent to be a top driver on this series," said Showalter. "Kelly's performance at Daytona's testing sessions and the way she deals with adversity on a daily basis makes me believe this could happen sooner, rather than later."
