On Saturday, Johnny Sauter will test the new spec engine expected to run in the Camping World Truck Series next season.
The defending CWTS champion, who along with GMS teammate Spencer Gallagher, conducted previous testing for the “Delta” engine at Darlington Raceway, will perform the confirmation test at Talladega Superspeedway with the Ilmor-designed power plant in a purpose-built truck following qualifying for the Monster Energy Cup Truck Series.
Ilmor currently provides spec engines for the ARCA series at a cost of about $40,000. The engines can run approximately 1,500 miles before needing to be rebuilt. Although there would be cost savings for the teams, the factory support to NASCAR’s top trucks would be trimmed considerably.
NASCAR will begin the optional roll-out of the spec engine in 2018. The engine is expected to be mandatory in 2019.
