Last to Seventh: Last year in the Ram Tough 200, Joe Ruttman qualified 16th but had to start the event from last place after an unapproved engine change after final practice. The team felt the engine was not performing, so they changed it. According to the NASCAR Truck Series rules, a team can only change an engine after qualifying if it is damaged and if the NASCAR inspector approves the change. "We had a tough race here last year," said Ruttman. "We had a little problem with our engine but the rules said if we changed it, we'd have to start in the back. Thank goodness for us we were able to get back to the front and get a solid finish out of the deal." This year though, I hope we'll start up front and finish there." Fortunately for Ruttman, he has the second best average starting percentage (4.3) in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series in 2000, just behind Mike Wallace.
Number 50: If Joe Ruttman can record a top five finish in Sunday's Ram Tough 200, it would be his 50th such finish in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. The only other drivers to accomplish this feat are Jack Sprague and Ron Hornaday. Miles Completed: When Joe Ruttman completes 132 laps of the scheduled 160 laps in the Ram Tough 200 at Gateway International Raceway this weekend, he will move into second all-time in miles completed in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. Ruttman who has been competing in the series since the first season, will have amassed 17,392.1 miles in his six year Truck Series career.
Moving to Second: When Joe Ruttman takes the green flag for the Ram Tough 200 at Gateway International Raceway, he will move into second place in all time starts (123) in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. The leader in starts for the series is Jack Sprague, who will be making his 129th start on Sunday.
Going to School: During last week's break from racing, Joe Ruttman took time to spend with students at the Dickson County Alternative Learning Center. Ruttman spent most of last Friday talking to students at the Center about setting goals and working to achieve them. "I had a great time," said Ruttman. "It was a lot of fun to talk to the kids. It's something special to talk to young people and see them react to what you have to say, not just think your some old man that is lecturing them. Every one of them has hopes and dreams. They just need a little help in getting on the right track to making them come true. I just hope that I was able to leave a positive affect with some of them."
Ruttman's Quotes for Gateway International Raceway
"I like this place. It's like a semi-road course to me. Each corner is drastically different, so you have to approach it like a road course."
"I haven't had great success here, but I do enjoy racing at Gateway. It's a drivers track because you have to have a good feel for your truck to get around it fast."
"A big reason I look forward to coming to St. Louis is we get to visit the Dodge plant that builds the Dodge Rams we race. Last year, I got to drive one the truck off the line. It was pretty awesome. In fact, I think the entire Dana Team is going up to the plant for the tour."
