Ron Hornaday and Jack Sprague have gotten a lot of ink this season for their exploits in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. The last two series champions, however, are beginning to look over their shoulder these days, and they see a familiar truck chasing them in the point standings.
It's the No. 3 GM Goodwrench Service Plus Chevrolet, with Jay Sauter behind the wheel. Sauter has had just as solid a beginning to the season as Sprague and Hornaday, with four top-10 finishes in the first four events.
Sauter is in third place, only 57 points behind Sprague in the point race heading into this Saturday's NAPACARD 200 at the .646-mile Evergreen Speedway.
"I'm just taking it one race at a time," Sauter said. "I'm focusing on consistency. If we can consistently be in the top-five, the wins will come and the points will come. We've got the momentum on our side."
Should Sauter make it to Victory Lane at Evergreen, it will mark the first time a Richard Childress Racing truck will have won there. Mike Skinner, the 1995 series champion, had 16 career series victories, but none at the Monroe, Wash., short track.
"It would be great to be the one to change history," Sauter said. "We're looking forward to running at Monroe.
"We had a good run at Portland, and with the two tracks being so similar, we should do really well this weekend. I enjoy racing short tracks because of my short track background."
