Portenga 23rd despite accident damage at Indy.

CLERMONT, Ind. - Hampered by damage sustained in an early-race accident, Steve Portenga battled to a 23rd-place finish in the Power Stroke 200 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at the Indianapolis Raceway Park Friday, August 2. Terry Cook won the race.

After starting 20th in the 36-truck field, Portenga raced inside the top-20 early in the 200-lap event before contact with another truck sent him crashing into the outside retaining wall on the front stretch. The No. 39 Roto-Rooter Chevrolet was significantly damaged in the incident, hindering Portenga's performance for the balance of the race.

"Pretty tough race for the Roto-Rooter Chevrolet," Portenga said. "We didn't get the kind of top-10 finish that we thought we could get, but everybody on the team worked hard after the accident to get the most out of the day. We were 32nd on the restart after the wreck. We ended up 23rd. Those nine positions could prove to be very important later in the year."

The performance kept Portenga 20th in the series point standings.

The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series continues with the Federated Auto Parts 200 at the Nashville (Tenn.) Superspeedway Park Saturday, August 10.
