John Nemechek lost control entering turn one at Homestead. His truck spun and hit flat on the driver's side. He was removed from the truck and transported by helicopter to the hospital. Nemechek was reported to be in "extremely critical condition" and suffering from a "severe brain hemorrhage, described as deep." At 5:30 p.m. EST, it was reported that a minor procedure to remove pressure from Nemechek's brain had been performed. No other surgery was planned at the time. Nemechek has been transported to the Neurological Health Care Unit at Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Unit, according to Dr. Phillip Villanueva. Nemecheck has no other serious injuries. Jay Sauter was also airlifted to Ryder after he and Tobey Butler tangled on Turn 1, sending both into the same wall that bore the brunt of Nemechek's blow only a few laps before. Sauter experienced a lack of consciousness, but was alert when taken to the hospital for a CAT Scan. Butler was treated and released and is suffering from knee and cervical strain according to Metro-Dade Homestead Motorsports Complex Dr. Stephen Olvey.
