Ram Tough 200 Pre-race Quotebook
The following are quotes from selected drivers who are preparing for Saturday's Ram Tough 200 presented by Pepsi at Gateway International Raceway.
JACK SPRAGUE No. 24 GMAC Financial Services Chevrolet "I hope the success we've had on shorter tracks lately doesn't mean that Mile Track Jack has gone away to stay. Seriously, though, we feel like the No. 24 Team GMAC Financial Services/GM Protection Plan Chevrolet is going to be competitive on every surface, at every track and in any type of conditions. (Crew chief) Dennis (Connor) and the guys make sure of that. And it's that type of consistency, regardless of the track circumstances, that help you win championships."
RON HORNADAY No. 16 NAPA Brakes Chevrolet "I am looking forward to racing in the St. Louis area. I am going in a day early, and staying an extra day for some NAPA appearances. I might even get a chance to catch a Cardinals' game. From what the NAPA guys in the area are telling us, folks are excited about the trucks coming to town. We tested at Gateway earlier this month and were real pleased with how we ran. Having a good test, and coming off a win in Memphis, has this NAPA team pumped up. Our focus is on winning as many races as we can this year. A win at another new track would be a neat deal."
TONY RAINES No. 19 Pennzoil Ford "This should be a big horsepower track from what we could tell during our test session. Passing will be tight, but I predict most track positions will be gained in turns one and two. We had a good test session. The tire Goodyear selected seems pretty strong. The only factor that could change everything is weather. When we tested earlier in the year, it was very overcast with a few showers. It will definitely be beneficial to have a practice session this Thursday."
STACY COMPTON No. 86 Royal Crown Cola Ford "This track is a cross between Phoenix and Homestead. It's definitely a track where you need plenty of horsepower along with the right setup for aerodynamics. We've got a great speedway truck here this weekend."
JAY SAUTER No. 3 GM Goodwrench Service Plus Chevrolet "The only time that I have seen Gateway International Raceway was when I watched the Busch cars run there last year on TV. I'm always excited to go to a new track, and if Gateway is anything like the track at Memphis, we should get along great there. With the weather being different from August to September, we felt that testing here earlier would be futile to our actual race day set-up, and that our time was better spent in the shop."
JIMMY HENSLEY No. 43 Cummins Engine Company Dodge "I'm looking forward to racing at Gateway and the fans in that market will see a great race with the trucks in town. We tested the Cummins Dodge up there a few weeks ago so maybe we can get our second win in front of all the Dodge Dealers."
RON BARFIELD No. 35 Ortho Lawn & Garden Chevrolet "This is the first time the truck series will be there at Gateway, and it will be the first time for me there, too, because I didn't do the Busch race there last year. Ricky (Craven) has told me all about it, and the one thing that surprises me about it is that it's a really fast race track. We've been adapting pretty quick to these new race tracks, and hopefully we'll go there, too, and have a couple of hours practice and get adjusted to the track pretty quickly. I'm looking forward to this weekend."
MIKE WALLACE No. 52 Purolator PureONE Filters Chevrolet "St. Louis has typically been known as a stick and ball sport area. There are a lot of small race tracks around the St. Louis area and they have produced some great NASCAR drivers. I think it's great they built this new track and that the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and the NASCAR Busch Series get to race there."
BUTCH MILLER No. 18 DANA Corporation Dodge "What can I say? This DANA Dodge team is awesome on new tracks. We qualified well last week at Memphis and had a strong race without having been there before. We tested at Gateway and really liked how the truck handled. With the race being this late in the season, hopefully the heat won't be as much of an issue as it was during the test. We just need to keep doing what we have been doing, qualifying well and racing strong. We are going to get this DANA Dodge to victory lane before the year is over. This would certainly be the place for us to capture our first win. At a new, beautiful race track with Dodge as the race sponsor. That would be a great achievement for this team. We have worked hard all season and keep improving with every race. I am ready and I know my team is ready."
ANDY HOUSTON No. 60 Addington Racing Chevrolet "I had the opportunity to test at Gateway several weeks ago. I was really impressed with the facility. Plus, the Addington Chevrolet seemed to adapt to the track real good. All in all, our team was very pleased with our test, and I really look forward to racing there this weekend. To me, the Gateway track resembles a combination of both Homestead (Fla.) and Phoenix. Turns one and two are similar to Phoenix, and three and four are like Homestead. Fortunately, I ran pretty good at both of those tracks earlier this year."
RICK CRAWFORD No. 14 Circle Bar Motel and RV Ford "Gateway is the second consecutive track that is hosting its first truck series race this season. Like Memphis, the Circle Bar team did not get a chance to test at Gateway. It's a different length of track than we've raced on before -- 1.25 miles -- and it's a uniquely shaped oval. With Roland Wlodyka leading our crew we should lock in on a set-up pretty quickly, though, and we do have an extra test day scheduled for Thursday. The track is run by the Long Beach Grand Prix Association, as is the Memphis facility. That organization did a great job putting on last weekend's debut race, so I'm sure they'll put on another great show."
SCOT WALTERS No. 37 Red Man Chevrolet "Last weeks engine failure was in no way a reflection on this team, and what we can do. Some times there is just a part failure and these things happen. The important thing is that the Red Man team regroup, and have a strong run at St Louis. We had a good day at the test session. We were able to try some different things on the truck that we think should help us in the race. It also gave Kenneth (new crew chief) and myself some more time to get to know one another. I think the Red Man team will be OK this week."
LANCE NORICK No. 90 NHL Dodge "Consistency has been our goal this season. It has been a tough road to get there but the last few races our efforts have finally begun to payoff. Bettering our qualifying efforts will help us even further. At Gateway this weekend, that is going to be our strongest focus, to qualify in the top 15, which will in turn improve our opportunity for a good finishing position."
RANDY RENFROW No. 78 MCI Dodge "Gateway is the first race with this new engine and this completely new MCI truck. I expect to post one of our best-ever qualifying efforts and run competitively in the race. With the improvements we have made as a team and the experience I have gained as a driver in this series, I think we are prepared to have a great run. My crew chief, Todd Myers, and the guys just keep giving me great trucks to drive. We have a true team effort. That is what it takes to get to the front."
