NEWS AND NOTES FROM THE RAYBESTOS® ROOKIE CONTENDERS - CRAFTSMAN TRUCK SERIES
Raybestos® Rookie Brendan Gaughan was the Raybestos® Rookie of the Race in the Las Vegas 350 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Gaughan finished eighth, his eighth top-10 finish of the season. He took top finishing rookie honors for the third consecutive race and for the 13th time in 19 Craftsman Truck Series races in 2002. Gaughan earned the second starting position and took top qualifying rookie honors for the eighth time this season.
Jason Small had a good day at the Las Vegas 350. He started 17th and finished 10th, his second top-10 of the 2002 season. Small joins Gaughan as the only member of this year's Raybestos® Rookie class to score a top-10 finish this season.
No Raybestos® Rookie led at Las Vegas Gaughan is the only Raybestos® Rookie to lead at least one lap this season. Entering the American Racing Wheels 200 at California Speedway, he has led five times in three races for 113.50 miles.
Gaughan maintains a commanding lead in the Raybestos® Rookie standings entering the race at California Speedway. He leads Bill Lester by 68 points (227-159).
Gaughan is 11th in Craftsman Truck Series points, best of any Raybestos® Rookie Contender. He is 114 behind 10th place Coy Gibbs and 62 ahead of 12th place Jon Wood.
Bill Lester was the third Raybestos® Rookie that competed in the Las Vegas 350. Lester placed 17th in the final rundown and was running at the finish of the race.
Jon Wood was the Raybestos® Rookie of the race in the 2001 American Racin Wheels 200 at California Speedway. Wood started ninth and finished third, behind race winner Ted Musgrave and Rick Crawford.
Wood and Brian Rose were the only Raybestos® Rookies to lead at least one lap in the race. Wood led twice for 16 laps while Rose held the top spot once for seven laps.
Eight Raybestos® Rookies qualified for the Auto Club 200 and seven finished on the lead lap: Wood, Travis Kvapil (seventh), Matt Crafton (ninth), Ricky Hendrick (10th), Billy Bigley (11th), Rose (12th), and Willy T. Ribbs (18th).
Kvapil was the highest qualifying Raybestos® Rookie at California, earning the second starting spot just behind pole winner Scott Riggs.
