Dover a diamond in the rough for Cook, Power Stroke® Diesel Ford.
DOVER, DE (May 24, 2002) - For the third consecutive year, the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series tour will visit Delaware - the Diamond State - where Terry Cook and his No. 29 Power Stroke Diesel Ford by International hope to shine in the MBNA America 200 at Dover Downs International Speedway.
"Dover is one of the premiere facilities on the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series schedule, said Cook. "It's a beautifully shaped concrete one-mile track. If you've ever raced on it, you know why it's referred to the 'Monster Mile.' As the race goes on, rubber actually builds up in the concrete joints making the track very rough. It almost feels like it's going to shake your fillings out of your teeth."
Cook and the Power Stroke Diesel team shook the competition earlier this season winning at Gateway International Raceway. The Indianapolis, IN resident then followed it up with a rock-solid fourth-place finish in the most recent event at Pikes Peak International Raceway to move into the Top-10 in the NCTS championship chase. According to Cook, just finishing unscathed at Dover will be a monumental achievement.
"Dover is a very tricky, treacherous track," said Cook. It's where you have to be on your toes all the time - not just race time, not just in practice, but in qualifying too. Any time you pull onto the track, you have to be on guard because the truck can get away from you and you can be wrecked in a heartbeat."
In the 2001 Truck Series event at Dover, Cook got a lap down to the leaders after a pit road penalty and never recovered rolling to an 11th-place finish.
"Last season's performance at Dover was nothing stellar for us," Cook stated. "We were underfunded and still looking for a sponsor at the time. We struggled in practice, qualifying and the race. We were served with a penalty for pitting outside of the box, got a lap down, gained it back only to lose it again late in the race with an ill-handling truck. Even though we didn't run very well, we took home a handful of notes. Because of that, we now know what particular items not to try this time around because we've learned from our experience at Dover last year."
Still basking in the glow of the win at Gateway and the solid effort at Pikes Peak, Cook is confident his Power Stroke Diesel team is finally on the right track this season.
"I have to admit I've never finished that well at Dover," said Cook. "Then again, I traditionally haven't finished that well at Pikes Peak and we had a great finish there last time out. We were able to carry the momentum from our win at Gateway over to Pikes Peak and we are looking to do the same at Dover."
Cook and his No. 29 Power Stroke Diesel Ford team will take the green flag in the MBNA America 200 at Dover Downs International Raceway Friday, May 31 at 3:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. The event will be telecast live on ESPN. MRN Radio will also carry the event on more than 350 stations worldwide including the American Armed Forces Network.
