Nelson Piquet Ready For NASCAR Debut
* Piquet Jr. Making His NASCAR Debut At Daytona...Former Formula 1 driver, Nelson Piquet Jr. is making the transition to NASCAR and is starting that journey at Daytona International Speedway, one of the most intimidating tracks on the circuit. Piquet Jr. has been working on his future in NASCAR since last season and is excited the moment is finally here. As a warm up, Piquet participated in the ARCA RE/MAX event at Daytona last Saturday. He qualified seventh and raced competitively until contact with another competitor disabled his chances of a good finish. Piquet Jr. finished 27th and learned valuable lessons about both the track and stock car racing that will be crucial to his success in the Camping World Truck Series event.
* How He Prepared To Get Behind The Wheel of a Truck...Having never competed on an oval track or experienced the weight of a stock car, Piquet Jr. participated in two test sessions with Red Horse Racing to help familiarize him with a race truck. He took part in a one day test at The Motor Mile in Virginia back in October and another two day test at New Smyrna Speedway in Florida just one month ago. In both test sessions, Piquet Jr. seemed to be a natural and adapted very well behind the wheel.
* Formula 1 Success... Son of three-time World Champion Nelson Piquet, Nelson Jr. began karting at just eight years old in his native Brazil. He spent eight seasons learning his craft in the Brazilian Karting Series and won three championships before graduating to cars in 2001. Competing for Piquet Sports in the second GP2 Series season in 2006, Piquet Jr. was one of two drivers to stand out from the crowd in the hotly-contested championship. His dynamic performance earned him the opportunity to sign as 2007 test driver for the ING Renault F1 Team. After completing a year as test driver for the ING Renault F1 Team in 2007, he graduated to a race seat for 2008 alongside Fernando Alonso. That season he earned a second place podium finish in the German Grand Prix and helped the team secure fourth position in the constructors championship. In 2009 he returned to the ING Renault team and participated in 10 events that season.
Nelson Piquet Jr. on racing at Daytona International Speedway "I'm very excited! The size of the Daytona track is amazing. I can't wait to reach 200mph side-by-side in a tight drafting pack of trucks! The plans for the season are coming together really well. I can't wait to get out on track and start my NASCAR career!"
Crew Chief Rick Gay on Daytona International Speedway "Nelson has a lot of natural talent and has really impressed me in both tests. I am excited to see him in a competition setting because it was apparent in the test that he has excellent vehicle control. I look forward to seeing him in action on the high banks of Daytona International Speedway."
Equipment Information Nelson Piquet Jr. will compete with chassis # CL06 in the NextEra Energy Resources 250 at Daytona International Speedway. This is one of the first chassis's in the Red Horse Racing stable and has previously served as a speedway back-up truck.
