WHAT HAPPENED? "The motor got real hot. These guys worked real hard and we were going to win this race today. It's too bad this happened. The Roush Racing Ford, everybody who has given me this opportunity, I can't thank them enough."
THIS IS YOUR FIRST TIME AT THIS RACE TRACK. HOW WERE YOU ABLE TO MAKE YOUR WAY FROM 31st TO FOURTH WITH SUCH EASE? "I really don't know. I'd have to say most of it was Jeff Burton. Jeff Burton came over to the shop and helped me out. We sat down for about an hour and a half and he told me how to run around here. I can't thank him enough."
YOU FOLLOWED SEVERAL VETERANS AROUND THE TRACK EARLY IN THE RACE. DID YOU TRY THEIR DRIVING LINES? "Absolutely. I tried a bunch of different stuff but we got in a pattern there that really worked. We were just taking it easy. This is race-winning truck right here. We could have been right there."
YOU HAD SEVERAL CLOSE CALLS WITH THE WALL PASSING SOME OF THE LAPPED TRUCKS. AS A ROOKIE, HOW DIFFICULT IS IT TO PASS HERE? "That's just all of may fault. I've never been here and there's only certain spots here you can pass and I hadn't found them quite yet."
RICK CRAWFORD-14-Circle Bar Motel & RV Park Ford F-150 (Finished 7th)
"What you're looking for is to finish good here at Darlington. I'm not here to beat the competitors, I'm here to race the race track and we did that. And, we ran good as far competitors are concerned. Congratulations to Bobby Hamilton; he deserved that. He ran good at Daytona, too. We'll go to Mesa Marin and beat and bang and knock 'em around and have an exciting race for the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and maybe get the Circle Bar Ford back in victory lane."
YOU WERE RUNNING IN THE TOP FIVE BUT THE TRUCK BOBBLED AT THE END. "I think if you we going to commentate what happened off of turn 2 you would say, 'Man., great save.' I had to save it in order to finish where we finished. It was a definite disaster over there and it just didn't happened. But, a good run today for the Circle Bar Ford and the race team. The guys in the pits did a great job. Ray Stonkus gave me a good truck to drive. We just needed to work on it some and maybe run 500 miles."
TERRY COOK-29-Power Stroke Diesel Ford F-150 (Finished 8th)
"That thing would just get so loose at the end of a run, we couldn't touch the throttle; it was out of control. I shouldn't even say from the beginning of the run, it was just form the beginning of the race. We struggled with it and tuned on it and got it better all race long. The best that we probably were was on a green-flag stop and made some adjustments that really helped it. It was a situation that the 1 truck was coming to put us a lap down so I had to run for all it was worth but I burned the tires off of it in no time at all, and got a lap down. Fortunately, we made it back up when the caution came out and the only set of tires that we had left were four scuffs. They had three laps on them as opposed to stickers and when it went back to green, we just don't have the right tire compound and we just basically had scuffs where everyone had stickers."
JON WOOD-50-U.S. Navy Racing Ford F-150 (Finished 19th)
HOW LONG WERE YOU FIGHTING THE OVERHEATING PROBLEM BEFORE IT ENDED YOUR DAY? "I knew we had a problem, but I didn't know it was that bad. We came into the pits on that last caution to put water in it, but it was too late."
DO YOU FEEL LIKE THIS TEAM IS AHEAD OF WHERE IT WAS AT THIS POINT LAST YEAR? "We're making progress. Today is just one of those things that I had no control over. From my standpoint, I think that our team is doing a lot better. We didn't have this trouble last year, and the things that we wanted to capitalize on and improve on we did. The things that are out of our hands, that's just the way it goes."
