Cody Coughlin to get shot with Kyle Busch Motorsports
Kyle Busch Motorsports signs on another up-and-comer for their Truck program.
Kyle Busch Motorsports is trying out another young gun. Less than a week after announcing that Gray Gaulding (17) would run for them in three races later this year, KBM has revealed that 19-year-old Cody Coughlin will make just his second start in the Camping World Truck Series at Michigan in two weeks, driving the JEGS sponsored No. 54.
Coughlin is a developmental driver for Joe Gibbs Racing, the team KBM owner Kyle Busch competes for in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Justin Boston, Christopher Bell (who won at Eldora) and Matt Tifft have also driven the No. 54 truck this season.
Coughlin hoping for a strong run in Michigan
“Kyle Busch Motorsports is on top of the game in the Truck Series,” said Coughlin, a 19-year old native of Delaware, Ohio. “It’s an honor to be able to race for this team. Kyle has helped me with some knowledge of some tracks this year and that has really helped me. I think this is a great opportunity and I’m expecting a great run.”
"Obviously I want to contend for the win," said Coughlin. "But I'll be satisfied with a good, solid top-10 finish after being up around the front all day long."
Giving JGR developmental drivers a shot at the national level
“Joe Gibbs Racing has called upon us the last few seasons to put a few of their young drivers in our trucks and help with their development,” said team owner Kyle Busch. “This year the extra seat time that Daniel (Suarez) has received by running our trucks has really seemed to help speed up his learning curve in the XFINITY Series. Cody’s another one of their young guys and we’re looking forward to the opportunity to work with him.”
Coughlin has performed well in Late Models and also has 17 ARCA starts, scoring 11 top tens, five top fives, two poles, and finishing as high as second. He drove for Bill Venturini in his lone Truck start earlier this year at Kentucky, finishing 20th.
